really nice
The outer case is that special "brass" that attracts magnets, It is also a little rough where it's been stamped out of the steel sheet When I say "rough" I don't mean it's sharp or uncomfortable, just that it's not a polished edge. If it were brass I'd simply polish the edges myself with, say, a manicure emery board and a lick of Brasso but as it's plated, I can't - and that is the _only_ reason I'm giving it four, not five stars. The lens mounting inner body is either brass or plated mazak and the whole thing is quite sturdy. It folds and unfolds well and of course the optics are perfectly adequate. The lens - actually I _think_ it's a two element assembly - is screwed into the body with a retainer ring. If I were to pay a LOT more I'd expect a full brass case with a closed position detent and an aspheric lens but this thing cost me under two quid, door to door and realistically, it is great value for money, looks rather good and performs well. To moan further about the fake brass cover would be a bit churlish, really.Highly recommended

Surprisingly sharp for 70% of area
Surprisingly sharp for a cheap loupe. The sharpness extends to about 70% of the lens area which is acceptable at that price and magnification. There is some colour minor fringing but not dreadfully so. For the few times I am likely to need it, I think it is excellent value. Bearing in mind that a good quality triplet loupe is over £40 this one gives pretty good value for money. I'm not absolutely convinced it really is a triplet but never mind, it works adequately.P.S. I have now bought myself an excellent Zeiss x10 loupe (£45.88) and realise that this cheap one is nothing like x30. It is probably more like x10. Comparing the Zeiss with this cheap one is like comparing a top of the line Nikon with an old Box Brownie. Both are usable but the Zeiss gives edge to edge sharpness without any colour fringing and it snaps clearly into focus. MUCH easier and more relaxing to use, you can actually alter the point of focus gradually through a gem looking for flaws. Try that with the cheap one!

functional and good. not great
Another impulse buy. Kind of for the kids. I remember cherishing little brass gizmos when young. It's OK. It works, does the job. Not brass - I knew that, but it does make a difference to the feel and look. Doesn't feel nice in the hand either. Partly weight - it's thin pressed plated metal, not heavy enough. Partly the sharp edges of the pressing. Just a little roughly finished all round.Jewellers file to the edges - it feels nicer, though as it's steel you wear through the gold colour slightly. That's OK, it's the inner edges, doesn't show, and it's better to feel nice, and the gold is too gold, shiny and artificial looking anyway.Very stiff to open and shut. WD40 sorts that, and again it helps the feel hugely. So - cheap, functional, and OK looking. What you'd expect from China at that price (bought at £1.53)

A very good x30 magnification lens.
I am very, very pleased with this, a x30 magnification lens for the sort of price for which you would expect a plastic toy one. Invaluable for anyone like myself, interested in the finer details of flowers, fungi, lichens etc. I love it.

loupe
Great little magnifier ,very powerful, finished in gold colour , only fly in the ointment the cover that duels as the part you hold , the edges are really sharp can't understand why you wouldn't finish these edges , they are not that sharp you can't hold it but considering the rest of it seems crazy , I'm sure it will get smoother with use !
