I've heard that this paste can only be used on certain types of cpus / coolers, is this true and if so, how would I find out if I can use it?

It cannot be used on any aluminium based coolers as the gallium in it will break that down . in general the cpu IHS are all ok as they are not aluminium based, Most coolers are copper based but it would be best to check whatever one you are using before hand.

What comes in the pack, just the LM or cleaning wipes and qtips too? Thanks.

It comes with the LM, two cleaning wipes and two q-tips. Ideally you would need to have extra cleaning stuff for a purere contact surface.

What does the | 2x | 2x mean please? Do I simply get four syringes of compound?

2x times depends on what paste I use all of them mx4 is easy to spread
