We're Going on a Bear Hunt: The bestselling classic in a super-sturdy board book for babies and toddlers

I love gifting books that create lasting memories — and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt is an absolute classic. I sent this board book edition to my 2-year-old granddaughter, and it’s quickly become a favourite in her growing collection. The story itself is timeless — full of rhythm, repetition, and adventure — and it's such a joy to read aloud. The illustrations are just as lovely as I remember, and they really draw little ones into the journey. What I really appreciate is the super-sturdy board book format. The pages are thick and durable, which makes it perfect for toddlers who are still learning how to turn pages gently. No tears, no bent corners — and it’s the right size for little hands to hold. One small downside is that the smaller size means the pictures aren’t as big or detailed as in the original picture book version. But for toddlers, this compact format is just right — it’s tough enough to survive daily reading and even a bit of chewing. 😉 This is one of those books that makes storytime feel like an adventure — and I love that we can read it “together” over video chat, too. Definitely recommend for babies, toddlers, and any young reader starting their library.

This book is a classic! I bought the hardback version to introduce my toddler to the story and she loves it. I would highly recommend for any toddler who loves books.

The boardbook edition is the right version for little hands without a doubt. I always used to buy paper versions but realised it was a losing battle and my children were also having me somewhat on edge panicking over the pages being messed up. With a boardbook they are now free to look at this as much as they want which is much better for them. There is no negative impact on the story or the illustrations having it in this style. The previous reviews mentioned the different versions available and I am very glad for that as I had intially picked this one but very nearly ordered the strange version with the thin insides! That would not have lasted my tribe due to their ages and also being quite heavy-handed with pages! The book has been read so many times already (ordered this before Easter) and it is still looking as good as new.

I believe that a '30th Anniversary Edition' is scheduled this year. I can thoroughly recommend watching Michael Rosen performing We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, on the website on the back cover (last image below refers). You soon realise why this chap has such appeal to little ones. I met him years ago and he is just the same in his approach. The quality board book measures around 18 cm x 15.75 cm, with rounded edges and has quality thick card pages throughout, in double-page spread format ~ 32 altogether. The superb atmospheric illustrations, from the talented Helen Oxenbury alternate between BLACK & WHITE & pastel COLOURs every turn of the page, giving that extra surprise element. As is usual, there is more to the pictures than first meets the eye with plenty to discuss. The simple facial expressions convey a variety of emotions and even the very little ones like to join in the repeat expressions (3 times) on the coloured pages, which increase in size on the page, namely: ~ Swishy swashy! ~ Splash, splosh! ~ Squelch, squerch! ~ Stumble trip! ~ Hoooo woooo! Once the family get to the cave…it gets very quiet: ~ Tiptoe! Then the format changes, but I couldn’t possibly spoil it! Good book on adventure. But I would like a toddler book to have colorful engaging illustrations. Some pages of this book are black and white which I don't like. I think this book is suitable for age 3 and up.

My son absolutely loves this book and we as parents don’t mind reading it over and over again, as well.

Je cherchais des livres en anglais à lire à mon enfant de trois ans et il a adoré celui ci, il y a un rythme et une répétition qui rend cela plus facile à comprendre et à apprendre. C’est peut être tiré d’une chanson. L’histoire est mignonne et rigolote.

Much loved classic. Baby has enjoyed from a young age and still now at one. Excellent value. High quality. Great gift too!

One of my go to books to buy for a baby shower. I’m this books stands the test of time and is fun to read or sing with kids. The pictures are simple and cute and my kids have always loved it. Being a board book is also great so toddler can throw it around and it holds up.

It is cute following them on their adventure. My 3-year old liked the river part. He usually lose attention after they reach the cave. Hopefully he would appreciate it when he’s older.
