I use the curl and shine, my hair is permed and not wavy.

Is it supposed to be a little grainy when it comes out

NO, this is a smooth foaming cleanser mousse...I really like using this product...it lather's up a lot with just a little bit of it....and it rinses off clean...I would recommend it if your looking for a gentle cleanser. This one does not have the grainy specks in it.

is it ok that its more of a cream not a foam when it comes from the pump?

It is more of a cream. I use with clarasonic and it gets really foamy.
