Does the veg/safety holder have metal spikes? The machine looks very similar to other makes but they show metal prongs on the veg/safety holder.

Yes there are metal spikes which skewer the veg keeping it in place while you use the machine

One reviewer states that the blades went blunt after a few weeks, is this the case? How does one sharpen them? Thanks.

Just read that review and it certainly is not my experience. I slice potatoes and carrots quite easily, if you julienne them yo do need a little more force but not much.

Is it dishwasher proof? The instructions do not mention anything in this respect.

I put my mandolin in the dishwasher. No adverse effects.

IME hand-guards dont allow cutting low enough resulting in waste (last 1cm or more) or not using which is dangerous - does this have the same problem?

You are left with a little but smaller than 1cm, depends also on the pressure you use and how slippy the item is eg cucumber.Hope this helps
