Question 1

is this caliper made in japan or some imported chinese junk from china.

Accepted Answer

What is the current (February 2019) status on where the Amazon-sold Mitutoyo 500-196-30 Advanced ONsite Sensor, absolute scale Digital Caliper is made? Is it Japan or China?

Question 2

Who needs a calibration certificate? I am DIY woodworker to use with a lathe etc, so would the non calibrated one work for me?

Accepted Answer

For woodworking in imperial I would highly recommend the Starrett 1202F-6 Dial Caliper1202 Dial Calipers
Fractional Dial Slide Caliper, Stainless Steel, 0-6" Range, .010", 1/64" Graduations. It's the only dial caliper that I'm aware of that does fractions like most local woodworkers use. I use it 1,000 x daily. I find it so much easier to see relative measurements with a dial, than with numbers.

Question 3

This is the second one I have purchased. Both of them when I install the supplied battery the display just blinks/ flashes.

Accepted Answer

Good afternoon,I apologize for the trouble. Please try using something dull and skinny such as a paperclip to try pushing the origin button. The origin button is very hard to press because it is not meant to be pressed on a regular basis. Our authorized Mitutoyo repair technicians use a dull rounded tip pick to press origin buttons. Also, the origin button sometimes needs to be pressed for up to 5 seconds. I reccomend that you try holding it for at least 10 seconds just to ensure you've held it long enough. Please let me know if this suggestions do not help and I will be happy to help you further!Thank you very much for your time and have a nice evening! Sincerely,WillMSI-Viking Gage

Question 4

Does the thumb friction wheel rotates freely once the jaws are closed at the require force?

Accepted Answer

no they do not. they are not like micrometers which do have a ratchet or some sort of friction thimble that wont let you tighten them any more. calipers are not as precise as a micrometer because of this.
