Hi Michael. Yes, there is a flashing light, when the telephone rings. Looking at the photo accompanying the description on Amazon, there is a small see through panel, just on the very bottom of the phone, this is where it flashes as a visual alert to incoming calls.

Does it have a loud and extended ringing tone, for elderly Mum who can't hear phone ringing

This phone is the best yet it has a very loud extended ringing tone and is adjustable .

Why do we get machine gun like noises when we dial out?

This may be due to setting of Pulse Dialling instead of Tone Dialling. Pulse dialling is very old method of dialing to suit your local exchange if not modernised. Rare now and possibly only very rural areas, Tone dialling setting will avoid Machine gun / 'Make and break' noises while dialling out. (IE Like an old rotary circular dial phone) Hope helps, Thanks.
