Paid £33.49 - free ink for life, fully featured. Unbelievable value
Firstly, no extra free month codes from me, I'm sure the people who have posted theirs need the ink more than I do. I was sceptical of this printer, I couldn't figure out the catch. It colour prints, scans, copies, faxes and has full connectivity, and you get either a three month trial of their Instant Ink service or a lifetime of 15 free pages a month with each additional ten pages costing a quid. The printer detects when your ink is low and orders it automatically for you. I wanted an occasional use printer I could setup and control from my phone alone - you can either connect directly to it or network it (you need to connect it to the Internet for the Instant Ink service to work) and it guided me through the setup step by step. It really couldn't have been much easier. It walked me through connecting to the Internet, installing the ink cartridges, calibrating the printer and scanner then that was it and I was ready to print. The printer it's replacing is an old Samsung Laser and it was almost as much to buy new toner as it was to buy this new printer. Running costs are always where they get you but with the free 15 pages a month I'm covered, just the occasional form or courier label is all I need. There's higher allowance paid subscriptions if you need them, although if you switch from the free plan to a paid plan you can't switch back so I won't be bothering. I spoke to an HP representative and asked if once the three month trial of a higher allowance plan was over I could switch to the free plan - he said yes but honestly all of the terms and conditions seem to suggest otherwise so I played it safe. Bird in the hand and all that. I'd say that the other plans offer pretty good value, and it's certainly convenient to have your printer monitor and order cartridges for you, but if you're just printing black and white then I think there are cheaper options out there. Plus just a single dot on a page counts against your allowance so be mindful when you're deciding what to print. The print quality is really rather good. I haven't tried the photo printing function but full colour pages came out well, certainly good enough for home use, and plain black text was clear and crisp. It's not super speedy compared to some printers I've used but again, for home use it's speedy enough. There's a quiet mode which slows the print speed down to make it less loud but it's not necessary really, although I can think of some late night uses when the kids are in bed. It scans and copies very well, no problems at all. The fact that it even does that at this price point is amazing. It's quite a large unit, but as it's packing so many features and a scanner bed in there I can forgive it. I haven't tried the fax, I can't even remember the last time I used a fax machine, but from what I read in the instructions it seems well specced. That's one thing I'd say - if you're interested in digging down into what the printer can do and how to do it then I'd recommend visiting HP's site and downloading the full PDF instructions as the ones included are only a quick start guide to get you up and running. The LCD touch screen is simple but functional, it has help pages and even short animations to show you what to do. I never found myself having to press the screen twice and it scrolls up and down easily. The printer has only one physical button on it - the power button. It can either be set to put the printer into a low power standby state or to shut it off completely. After 20mins it'll enter standby automatically. The printer is currently priced at about £50 - that seems more like what I'd have expected to pay although even at that price I still think it represents extremely good value. Hopefully Amazon will get more back in stock and the price will drop again. The build quality is fine, plasticky but with a bit of heft. Its well designed and barring rough use or accidents I don't see it falling apart. Overall I think it's a terrific printer for the money, as far I can see there is no catch, at least for me. I get 15 pages free for the duration of the life of the printer, it suits us down to the ground. It's does everything I want and more and there's no running costs barring paper. It makes my old printer look like a money sucking ancient artifact. It has to be five stars, it's just amazing value for a printer this capable.

Incredible technology (but tricky to set up)
This was not easy to set up. It took me hours to understand how it works. It's very clever in connecting wirelessly to my lap top. It seems amazing that you can send a print to the printer with no cables required, although it did come with a cable if you did want it to hook up. Interestingly, it did not require the WiFi password. I bought this mainly for scanning documents and HP Scan software is brilliant, once you reach that stage. You can add individual scans, rotate if required, move the order of pages, remove unwanted pages and, at the end, save it as a PDF file. This also has a feeder so you can scan several pages at a time or one by one. At 600 resolution, it takes ages to scan but at 300, it's quick and still a very good image. I don't expect to print out much but I do want to scan important documents and that need just increases and if you need a hard copy, then just print out your PDF file. Easy to back up to a USB key too. It's quite a size so I have it set up in the spare bedroom and I can print out while sitting in the living room on my laptop. It seems to have quite a range so no problems with the laptop communicating with the printer. I signed up for the £1.99 ink deal. More than enough for my printing needs. It's amazing technology for the printer to communicate with the internet and order new ink supplies. I remember a time when you could buy an ink jet printer for around ten to fifteen pounds and just replace the printer when the ink runs out. In those days, ink was very expensive. But now, technology catches up and HP have a very neat and easy way of reordering at a very cheap price. It is tricky setting it up and you might need to google for help. However, once it is set up and working perfectly - it's a wonderful feeling of relief. I bought mine for £42 and that's amazing value for the technology you get with this printer and scanner. Plus, two months of free ink too. I'm delighted with this purchase, even though I was pulling my hair out most of the day, setting it up.

good value
I have purchased three of these; two worked, one didn't, and getting Amazon to refund and collect proved to be a nightmare. Eventually we sorted it out but I felt I had to argue far too much for a simple refund / replacement of a product that didn't work. I realise this is supposed to be a review of the product and not of Amazon, but the fact is that one of the three I purchased did not work, and if you have a similar situation, then be aware that I had to debate with several people in Amazon, and eventually a very professional supervisor, before we sorted this out. Having said this, the printer is great. It's cheap and cheerful and does the trick. It is easy to install (I use a Mac, so I can't speak for PC) and within minutes I was ready to printer. They provide drivers on CD and online, although my Mac had its own drivers so I can't say how good their drivers were but I have no reason to think there was anything wrong. The printing is clear and fairly crisp for the price bracket.

UPDATED AFTER 5 years GREAT PRINTER plus codes for more Free Ink
Further update after 5 years, Has been a great printer and scanner , I print every day and instant ink is great being much cheaper than even buying refilled cartridges and you never runout of ink as the new cartridges are sent automatically in advance, photo printing is very good and with instant ink you can print on maximum dpi for the same cost as draft . Updating now having used the printer for a few months , firstly the instant ink I find to be very good . I used to refill my cartridges on old printers to save money , but now I think the instant ink is better . It is quite economical and less mess , also it means you are using proper ink and cartridges. I have now done some enlarging of photos , having saved scans as jpegs , and printed on best quality and they came out very well. Now had it a few weeks , have used it to print , scan , fax , and copy . All very easy to do , copy option is easy to set on the touchscreen , faxing - a keypad comes up on the touchscreen can't really say anything against it I got this printer to replace a HP 4500 series all in one because I wanted print , scan , auto feeder , and fax like on my old machine. my old machine had become faulty after 5 and a half years. Very easy to set up wireless printing from my desktop , the touch screen is better than the display on the old one , and print quality is good. some reviewers say it is flimsy , I don't think so , and at the price is a very good deal You get 3 months free ink , but in the code box enter ' nWbsC ' and you will get another free month of ink , then enter ' freeink ' for another free month , making 5 months in total . you can cancel the instant ink at any time before it starts to charge you , or change it to a different amount of pages per month

Wow!! I love this printer.
Wow!! This thing does it all!! Prints, scans, photo copy and even a fax machine!! The main reason, we were looking for a printer, was because my kids needed one for school/college. The other, was to print off digital junk journaling kits too!! So it had to be capable of printing, in fine detail, as well as documents, CVs and homework assignments!! We also needed to look, at how much it was going to cost us, to run? For example, are the replacement inks, going to cost so much money, that it actually works out cheaper, to buy a new printer!? One of the main things, I was attracted to with this machine, was the subscription service "HP Instant Ink". This service is amazing, the printer detects that your ink supply is low, it sends this information to the people at HP and they send out more ink!! It's also ridiculously cheap in my opinion, making this the overall winner for us!! when we received the machine (exactly when we were told it would be!!) It was very easy to set up, I was printing with in, a matter of minutes!! The print quality is brilliant for what we wanted it for. And just to add a little more wonder to this machine, while playing about with the settings, I discovered, that you can print, among other things music paper!! With my son being a musician, this will be cheaper than buying the pads of it from a shop, he can just print his own!! The touch screen is very responsive and i found it a delight to use. I love this machine and I'd definitely recommend it to others looking for this kind of thing!!

The housing is a bit flimsy but the print quality is excellent. I was printing a set of decorations for ...
You can get an extra month of ink from the HP-instant-ink free trial if you use the promotion code "lVL8z" - full disclosure that's a referral link so I also get one :) Have to say I am very impressed with this printer! I received it the day after I bought it even though it was meant to take 3-4 days and had it working about 20 minutes later including time taken to clear a space for it and make a cup of tea. The housing is a bit flimsy but the print quality is excellent. I was printing a set of decorations for a kids party and got perhaps 30 full-colour pages out of the trial ink cartridges - the black ink is still going. My only design issue with the machine is the paper-holder which swings out from the bottom and sticks out a bit. I can imagine it getting caught up as someone goes past and snapping off or tipping over the printer. I ended up folding it back and letting the paper drop to below the printer. I'll set up a tray there for this purpose. Otherwise operation is relatively quiet and fast - I expected it much slower for the cost. Printed pages looked crisp with bright colours and sharp lines. Even heavily printed pages didn't show obvious 'printer track lines' that sometimes come through. I only printed illustrations and signs (no photos) so cannot comment on those. If you're looking for a 'everyday' printer, I'd recommend this for sure. Excellent printer for twice the price. Delighted.

The printer is okay. Instant ink is not.
So, the printer itself is okay, no problems. The setup is easy enough. However, you should be careful with their Instant Ink service. It says the first three months are free, but then when you actually go to setup the printer, no trace of the 3-months-free offer, so being cautious I chose the free option, which is only for 15 pages/month. I was also told in no uncertain terms that this plan would only start when I'd insert the ink cartridges that came in the mail (they are still sitting in my drawer as I type this). Of course, this is not what happened, and silly me I launched a printing queue of 20-ish pages with the ink that came with the printer, which of course took me over their free 15pages/month. However, the pages I didn't use the previous month somehow didn't roll over, and I was billed 1 pound for fifteen pages. It's just 1 quid, no big deal, so I cancelled the subscription. However, now somehow they'll still count the prints and will keep billing until the end of the month so now I cannot finish using the included cartridges that I could have used if I hadn't registered with Instant Ink. I'll keep the printer, but it'll certainly be the last time I buy an HP product.

Great printer for an unbelievable price
Had ink problems with my old printer (not an HP printer) so brought this as a replacement, and it was delivered the next day, quicker than expected. Neat and easy to setup, connected to my WiFi without any problems can print from my computer,iPad,iPhone, easily and quickly all this took about ten minuets to setup without any problems. Print quality was as good if not better than any other printer I have owned, photo copying and scanning a doddle, also can use as a fax, replacement cartridges are at reasonable cost compared with previous printers I have had. Feels and looks well made and for the money I think it is a bargain. Have nothing bad to say about it and would thoroughly recommend it for household/small office use. This is the first HP printer I have owned and am very impressed with it so far. Update dec16,I have had it for sometime now and still believe it is the best value for money printer I have ever owned, works perfectly whatever I ask of it can't recommend it enough.
