It is charged via a USB connection but - just to clear this up - on the other end is a normal 13 amp three pin pug?

No, there is just a lead with two USBs. It connects to the computer to charge. It takes quite a long time, but I would estimate the charge lasts about 7 to 8 hours of use. The level of light is very good.

I'll need a separate 3-pin uk usb adapter to charge this. is the usb type a?? also, can't find any manufacturer/retailer facts about the charge rate.

The torch comes with a USB/USB cable and can be charged from a mains adapter or a computer (which I've not done). I don't know the charge rate it can take but the internal battery is pretty big so it will take hours to recharge if you've used it a lot.

Really confused now reading the answers to questions regarding charging. How do you actually charge it if you can't plug it direct into a socket?

Manufacturer does not supply plug. They only provide the USB cable. You have to use any existing phone chargering plug. If you dont have one already, they are easily purchased separately for a couple of pounds. It is annoying the manufacturer does not supply plug but the product is worth the money. Hope this helps.
