I couldn't find one big enough so i cut out three layers from a cardboard box and wrapped it in foil. It worked, **Q: How much fruit cake mix is needed?** A: Hi, What I did was first to measure the book tin and my usual cake tin and calculate the volume. In my case the book was more than 3 tim bigger. then i experimented. I put a victoria sponge mixture ( 2oog marge, 150g sugar 4 med. eggs 2oog s-r flour) into half the book tin, just one page. It baked well bur was nowhere nearly deep enough. From this I worked out that I needed 41/2. times the quantity I normally used. I advise a similar experiment. A word of warning: thetin is super smooth but it is very thin. When I made the book cake I greased the tin, sat it on a baking tray (you mightn't need to do this for a fruit cake as the base is unlikely to burn) but do wrap the outside of the tin in layers of paper or foil to ensure the sides don't get singed. I cook fruit cakes at a fairly low temperature for hours so that would be a help against the sides getting too hot. Hope this helps. The finished cake looked great. I don't know if my 2 lots of batter will be the same as what they suggest? help!** A: i had the same problem but i managed to work it out eventually, this tin actually takes four standard victoria sponge mixes two in each side of the book but i work with six as you want the cake to rise above the top of the tin so you can level it off. so 3 in each side of the book any trimmed off goes lovely spread with jam in the bottom of a trifle, or just with jam and custard as a pudding at tea time. it is a beautiful cake when decorated, but dont forget to lengthen the cooking time accordingly. wrap some doubled brown paper around the edge of the tin so it stands about two inches higher than the sides all around and put a piece over the top when cooking, it will prevent the outer parts of the cake drying out or over cooking during the extended baking time. ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ When you are baking for a crowd, this is a super cake tin *by A***R on 11 November 2015* This cake tin is large and perfect if you are baking for a crowd. If you are after a book shaped cake tin, this is a good choice. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great item *by G***E on 1 August 2025* Perfect baking tin ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ So much easier than carving cake *by T***N on 8 December 2019* This big tin takes what I would call 3 times an average Victoria Sponge sandwich mixture. It makes a large cake in the shape of an open book. I used a product that makes it easier to remove cakes from tins and the book-sponge turned out unscathed. It was evenly cooked, evenly risen and took about twice as long to bake as 8-inch diameter deep sponge would. The size makes it a little unwieldy so you need a steady hand an a secure base for your turntable when icing but it's a great size for a big celebration. I normally bake sponges, carve and build them into various shapes. This tin makes a lovely book. My only reason for 4 not 5 stars is that the tin is thin; there's already a small dent in the rim. So treat it carefully. There was a thicker one on Amazon but it was much more expensive but it did have ledges to represent pages.. This works well an you can pipe the page edges when the cake is baked.
