I couldn't disagree more!Yes, the cover is pink and blue and sparkly. Big deal. The contents of the book are VERY gender-neutral, as are the illustrations. Each page is based on a term of endearment used for babies (pumpkin, sweet pea, peanut, etcetera) that works for both boys and girls. The illustrations are very cutsey, but in a babyish way, not a girly way. The colors used are also fairly neutral, ranging from yellow and green and orange to purple and blue and YES, some pink (heaven forbid your little man be exposed to it)!And most importantly-- I like this book a lot, but my son LOVES it. If you line up several books and ask him to pick, he chooses this one every time (over "boy" books about dinosaurs and trucks, and even Joyce Wan's more neutral-covered "We belong together"). He loves looking at (and touching) the illustrations, and he giggles every time we get to the page that reads "You're my sticky little gumdrop!".In short: don't let the cover (and more close-minded reviewers) deter you. Buy your son this book!UPDATE: 2/9/2014This book (along with JW's more recent work) is still my son's firm favorite. We own TONS of books (including the classics!) but this is the book he keeps coming back to. Doesn't matter where I hide it on the shelf, he pulls it out and has me read it over and over again. At nine months old, he can say, "mama," "dada," "byebye," and "buh" for book. Mission accomplished, so far. :)When I first opened this book, I was a little disappointed at the lack of text on each page. I read it to myself and thought, "well, that's nothing special." Reading the review @nancykate wrote, I decided I would have to emphasize everything like she did to get my son interested.Well, it worked! We have a HUGE collection of books in his room. Maybe 100-150 books in and on top of his bookshelf. We try to read different ones to him daily, but this is one he always wants to come back to. He'll reach out his arms toward it and whine for us to get it for him, and when we read it he's all smiles the whole time. I kiss his cheeks on the first page, nibble his fingers on the second page, squeeze his chunky little thighs for the third page, etc. Something different for every page, and then on the final page I pretend like I'm going to nibble his neck. He giggles and turns his head TO LET ME. It's so adorable. I had to have it to read to my daughter, who was one at the time. She loved it too, so I was really pleased. I do have to point out the super high quality of this book. It held up to my daughter chewing on it quite a bit, which many other books DID not survive. Additionally, the colors are just so bright and candy-ish and pretty. The little faces on all the items make me giggle.I love just about anything that Joyce Wan does for baby board books and want to collect them for myself.
