Skulls is a beautiful spellbinding exploration of more than 300 different animal skulls-―amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles―written by New York Times bestselling author, Simon Winchester and produced in collaboration with Theodore Gray and Touch Press, the geniuses behind The Elements and Solar System. In Skulls, best-selling author Simon Winchester (author of The Professor and the Madman; Atlantic: A Biography of the Ocean; Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded; and others)tells the rich and fascinating story of skulls, both human and animal, from every perspective imaginable: historical, biographical, cultural, and iconographic. Presenting details about the parts of the skull (including the cranium, the mandible, the shape and positioning of the eye sockets, and species-specific features like horns, teeth, beaks and bills), information about the science and pseudoscience of skulls, and a look at skulls in religion, art and popular culture, his stories and information are riveting and enlightening. At the center of Skulls is a stunning, never-before-seen-in-any-capacity, visual array of the skulls of more than 300 animals that walk, swim, and fly. The skulls are from the collection of Alan Dudley, a British collector and owner of what is probably the largest and most complete private collection of skulls in the world. Every skull is beautifully photographed to show several angles and to give the reader the most intimate view possible. Each includes a short explanatory paragraph and a data box with information on the animal's taxonomy, behavior, and diet.Skulls was published in December 2011 as an e-book for the iPad by the innovative e-book publishers Touch Press, creators of the best-selling e-books for iPad The Elements and Solar System. Both books were also published in print by Black Dog & Leventhal. Interesting
I am pleased with this book, it's interesting and shows a broad spectrum of skulls from across the animal kingdom. However, as mentioned by other reviewers, there is no sense of scale, the pictures are all of a similar size. It would be helpful for the description of the animal/bird/reptile to include a bodylength/height, particularly for lesser known species. Also, I noticed that there are a couple of sheep skulls, shown mostly for impressive horns maybe, and they are classified as 'Bovidae', can this be right? They are even toed ungulates, but surely not bovids. Any thoughts?

Spectacular
I was blown away by this book. The photography, design, layout, text - everything is just so thoughtfully put together, reflecting this one of a kind collection beautifully. For artists, animal enthusiasts, or just as an utterly fascinating coffee-table book, it is worth every penny. Magnificent, and clearly a work of absolute passion for the subject matter. I knew it would be good, but wasn't expecting it to be this breathtaking.

Great book
I wanted this book as a gift for my wife. She is an Artist and a lot of her work involves depictions of skulls and we have a number of these scattered around the house. Very impressed with the quality of the book and the images displayed. If you like skulls, you will love this book !

Peek Inside
This is a beautiful book. If you think because the subject matter is skulls that this book will be creepy or macabre, you will be pleasantly proven wrong. In this book I was able to see the beautiful and rare in a format like I have never seen. Here you will see the skull of a dodo, walrus, wolffish, bandicoot, sea lion, two headed cow, capybara, chameleon, and vampire bat just to name a very few. All with scientific descriptions and classifications, and in some cases a few notes. The fish and reptile skulls are particularly fascinating to me. I have never seen anything like them, full of structures that have to be seen to be appreciated. I bought this book because I like to draw and paint animals and decided it is time to learn more about animal anatomy and the unseen structure of the skull as the foundation to build upon. This book will be a valuable resource to any artist looking to do the same. You will not be disappointed, the layout and detailed photography of this book are amazing.

Bel libro!

Wonderful for bone collectors!
Wonderful book. High quality photos of each skull. Simon's collection is really quite amazing and the information about each skull is great. Bone collecting is my life and this is one of my favourite books about skulls.
