Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens

Awesome lens! I know it's expensive 'for a zoom' but the reality is that the quality of zoom lenses has been getting better and better.....this is as good as it gets for a zoom with a great zoom range. It is sharp, you can look at loads of reviews and try and pixel peep but stop wasting your time and just buy it, then get out and use it, you'll love it!! OK, at f5.6 it isn't as fast as we would like, but for the weight and relative size (in comparison to a f.28 prime it is compact), and price realistically we can cope with that....especially with the ISO performance on DSLR's now. Do I still want a 500mm f4?? Yes of course!! I want the 600mm and to 800mm too......but try travelling with them all!! Only ok on a road trip, you're gonna pay to get them all on a plane! This is ideal for travelling with. I know you want to know if it works with TC's.......the good news is that with a 1.4 it is fine, but you do have to use good long lens technique; sturdy tripod, cable release, mirror lock up etc... I haven't tried it with a tc above this but think it would start to get unusable. With 1.4 you can print and it is sharp enough......just, it isn't a prime. Overall though if used for what it is mean't for, you'll love it.

This is quite an expensive lens, but results so far make me believe it is worth every penny. I am using it on a D300, which being a DX camera, means this is equivalent to a 120-600mm lens. The VR system is excellent; as you look through the viewfinder whilst holding the lens, it obviously waivers around a bit, but as soon as you slightly depress the shutter release, the image in the viewfinder is rock solid; its fantastic. I have achieved great results at 1/60th sec whilst handheld, which for me is very good going. The autofocus system is very quick; but I also find it very easy to use on manual focus. As you would expect with all the electronics and glass, its a fairly hefty weight, but not uncomfortably so. The lens comes with a good quality case, which is useful for me as it will not fit in my gadget bag. This is the most expensive item of photographic equipment I've ever bought, but I am very happy with the results I'm getting, so I think its worth the money. Highly recommended.

certainly a big step up from its predecessor, but with the D750 I had trouble getting sharp images utilising the VR. I've since learned this camera has issues with certain VR lenses, which eas allegedly fixed in a firmware update. The sharp images I did obtain were superb, excellent sharpness and contrast up to 350mm, then a little drop at the top end.

Arrived very quickly after ordering. Took it on safari to Kenya, coupled with a D7000. Last time my gear was a D300 with 70-300 but this combo was much, much better. Caught some beautiful, deep and clear images, and there wasn’t much in the way of flare. It’s a lot bigger and heavier than my old lens but it isn’t too uncomfortable to hold, although I wouldn’t like to lug it around for any distance (probably an age thing). Focusing was pretty good although I missed a couple of shots where the subject was quite close, and the VR seemed to work ok when it was needed (I used a bean bag mostly). It’s expensive yes, but it’s pretty good, and for me it’s an indulgence I’m glad I treated myself to.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens I had the 80-400 old version from launch and it has been one of my most used lenses. The only gripe was the focus speed which made it pretty porr on anything moving fast. However mine was very sharp at all focal lengths, the VR worked very well and many images were published from pix taken with it. From the F5 to the D800 it took literally tens of 1,000s of images. The VR broke and I got it fixed but then earlier this year something came apart inside and the excellent Fixation quoted over £600 to repair it. Anyway I got the new one from Amazon for £2,164 which was OK. Bottom line is it good? Is it worth the money? Yes on both counts. The focus is snappy, the VR really really works, the contrast is better, no flare at all (the old lens was good there too), zooming super smooth, not too heavy. These days I frequently fo out with just the 16-35, 70-180 micro and now the new 80-400 when biking or walking far. The tripod collar is slightly bendy but not bad. So in answer to the critics I see nothing to fault so far. In a recent Folk Festival weekend I used it extensively for video and handheld stills, some a slow as 1/50th and still good. Far far better than the 70-200 plus teleconverter. Obviously not as good as my 500mm f4, but hey..... I am so pleased that I am thinking of getting a D7100 as a spare body for the 500 and the 80-500. So if you want a highly versatile three lens setup get the 80-400VR, 24-70 and the 16-35VR. I know that this lens will be constantly in my bag and on a camera. It is that good.

After reading the reviews from other people, I decided to bite the bullet and purchase one for myself. I enjoy bird photography in particular and had previously used the 70-300mm Nikon lens. However, although it has taken me a bit of time getting used to the weight of this lens, I have managed to get some good shots of birds in flight quite a distance away which is what I bought it for. It's a good lens for taking all wildlife shots as I also photograph flowers and insects while I am on my walks and don't have a macro lens. It may not be the best for these but it takes quite an acceptable shot and saves changing lenses. I manage to carry this lens on a walk of about 2 hours so think that I've got used to it quite well.

This lens is overpriced. It lacks resolution especially on large sensors like the D800 and the D7100. Autofocus is slow when compared with other professional lenses. I use this lens for aviation photography and for me it's unusable between 200-400mm.

A crisp sharp lens from 80mm to 400mm on a Nikon D610. Even hand held "snapshots" of the moon are clean and sharp. The motor is incredibly fast for such a big lens. Switching the D610 to DX mode makes this lens 600mm and the images are still sharp with very little or no colour fringe. One of the best lenses Nikon has ever made and worth every penny.

Dieses Objektiv tritt nun die Ablöse des SIGMA 120-400/4.5-5.6 OS an. Doch etwas abgeschreckt durch den ursprünglich hohen Preis des NIKON's meinte ich, dass SIGMA ist für den speziellen Einsatzbereich von bis zu 400mm ausreichend; behielt aber das NIKON-Objektiv stets im *Auge*. Das SIGMA ist gut aber deckte meine Anforderungen letztendlich nicht zu vollen 100 Prozent ab. Nun der Entschluss, kräftig zu investieren und auf das neue NIKON 80-400mm umzusteigen. Die ersten Testbilder sind gemacht und es offenbart sich eine neue *fotografische Welt*. Schärfe im Bild bei vollen 400mm ohne Ende. Es liegen sichtbar *Welten* zwischen beiden Objektiven. Das Nikon ist groß und relativ schwer als ständig angesetzter Begleiter an meiner *alten* D300 mit Batteriegriff. Das NIKON 80-400mm weckt ähnliche Erinnerungen wie zu analogen Zeiten das 80-200mm/2.8 an F100. Groß, wuchtig, relativ schwer aber mit Wahnsinns tollen Bild-Ergebnissen. Zusammenfassung meiner ersten Eindrücke bzgl. NIKON 80-400mm/4.5.-5.6: Groß, relativ schwer im Gewicht, aber liegt gut in Hand durch Abstützung der Stativschelle am linken Handballen, leichtes kontrolliertes Verdrehen/Verändern des Zoom-Bereiches, schneller und sehr präziser Autofokus, optimale Schärfe über den gesamten Bereich, einen Kauf den man nicht bereut und bereits kurz darauf nach etwas *Besseren* sucht. Und somit bestimmt, da bin ich mir sicher, eine schöne und wertvolle Kombination zu meiner stets *geliebten* D300 für längere Zeit.

En teoria, el objetivo es nuevo, pero al abrir el paquete y ver como viene la caja y el objetivo, en el interior de su funda, envuelto de mala manera con papel de burbujas y su bolsa "original" de Nikon, tiene pinta de que este objetivo ha sido utilizado y devuelto de mala manera. En productos de estas características y precios, Amazon debería de ser mas cuidadoso con ellos (embalajes, etc...). Lo probare a conciencia y, en caso de alguna anomalia, lo devolveré..., es un producto muy caro y delicado... Actualización a fecha 9/8/26: Efectivamente, tras probarlo con detalle, el objetivo no enfoca bien, tiene mala nitided. Se ha comparado con imágenes tomadas con otras lentes y en las mismas circunstancias y condiciones de disparo. Definitivamente lo devuelvo.

Súper bien. Yo lo compré por recomendación de un amigo que también había visto que valía la pena. En cuanto al precio muy bien. Me salió más barato que en Estados Unidos. Muy buena promoción

I have had one of the original 80-400mm lenses almost since it was introduced, and it has been my mainstay lens for hiking and finding wildlife. It performed quite well, and while it had its issues, the versatility and weight more than made up for them. This lens takes that concept and upgrades it to amazing levels. There are very few things to be snarky about on this lens. * Takes teleconverters. And still has great AF and sharpness with the 1.4x TC. The old lens doesn't work with TCs. * Much sharper and better contrast. Wow. There is a quite noticeable improvement in optical quality even at normal viewing. The old lens took great photos but was a little mushy. My 600mm prime is sharper, but this is pretty darn good, and I would probably not see the difference except that I was looking at similar bird shots with the 600mm and this lens with the 1.4xTC right next to each other. Without the TC, it's sharp enough that it would be very difficult to see anything to complain about except under lab conditions. * Autofocus is faster. Honestly it's not so much faster than the original 80-400 that you would miss many, if any shots because of it. Continuous tracking autofocus is noisy but is better than the original. For birds, it's pretty good. You lose focus sites with a teleconverter attached because of the minimum f/stop, but it's still pretty darn good. It locked and tracked the airplane for my daughter's first solo flight perfectly. This is a superb airplane/airshow lens. * Close-focus. Still darn good and fast. Good for critters you can get close to. Great for birds at a feeder. * Improved VR. VR will help dramatically for some subjects when handholding, but is pretty useless for fast-moving subjects. VR can help with some nice bird effects, allowing for wingtip motion blur while holding the scene solid. You'll still probably find yourself bumping up the ISO unless you're in full sun with this lens, especially if you are using a TC. Downsides * Really expensive. * Tripod collar is even more lame than the original 80-400mm. You can not release the foot from the tripod collar, which is annoying for handheld use. Get a good collar and removable foot from Really Right Stuff. This is is still a heavy lens, and you will get tired handholding it unless you're in reasonably good shape. If you're going to use it a lot, get some exercise! Taking pictures is a good method :) If you have the luxury of being able to use a tripod, then do so. It will help. Get a gimble head if you can (I like Really Right Stuff - it also does a great job as a panoramic head). Ball heads are lousy for tracking subjects but are quick and easy to set up, smaller and lighter. Some, like the Acratech, do a passable job as a pseudo-gimble when on a good tripod. This lens + the 1.4X teleconverter is an amazing kit for nature/wildlife/airshows/car racing/motorcycle racing etc. I don't have a 1.7X, but the 2.0X is too much of a compromise on finder brightness, f/stop and focus capability for me. This combo is easily transportable and easily handled. Much of the time the 80-400 is enough, and when it isn't, the TC works great. If you can justify the expense, this kit will make you very happy.

Je possédais déjà le précédent 80-400 de chez Nikon. Celui-ci, qui, ne le cachons pas, demande un sacrifice financier important, lui est supérieur à tous point de vue: une motorisation parfaite et super rapide et silencieuse, et une optique bien supérieure. Je dirai qu'il excelle à toutes les focales et à toutes les ouvertures! Que rajouter? C'est la perfection qui équipera aussi bien le format FX que DX, auquel cas il sera à peu près un zoom de 120 - 600! Mais le système VR permet même à cette focale, et en retenant sa respiration, bien sûr, de se passer de pied pour un sujet fixe. J'ai cassé ma tirelire, mais je ne le regrette pas!
