A "Lavish" 10-Star Treasure
I bought THE ETERNAL ARMY to learn more about its discovery, the reason for its creation, and above all, for its many incredibly stunning/revealing photographs. So closely are the soldiers shown, for example, that one can clearly see the different facial expressions of each. But I was even more amazed by how detailed and different the backs of their heads are, especially the ones with braided hair. And that each soldier's armor is made up of a myriad plates absolutely astonished me.In addition to the famous soldiers and bronze chariots (also shown in incredible detail), the camera treats the reader to close-ups of the chariot driver, archers, functuaries and the scantily clad figures now thought to perhaps be gymnasts or wrestlers "ready to engage in an exercise of martial arts." Shown too are many artifacts, such as bronze birds, that were found along with the army. But perhaps most mind-boggling of all are the photographs of finds yet to be reassembled, for they attest to how monumental the task has been to excavate and restore but a fraction of the emperor's army.Had the above, including the fascinating information about the army, been all that was in this book, I still would have gladly spent every dollar I did to purchase two copies. But much to my amazement, there was even more: approximately 90 pages of background about ancient China and the Qin empire--pages laced with stunning photographs of related artifacts and watercolors, pages so interesting that I learned much about a period that I'd had absolutely no interest in. And as an added bonus, the entire book is written in prose not the least bit pedantic. For these reasons, there are neither superlatives nor stars enough to convey how highly I recommend this book. --B. Evans, 12/11/07

Gorgeous book
This is a new edition of the Italian book on the terracotta army you see out of print elsewhere on Amazon. As the reviewers of the previous edition note, this is an absolutely magnificent volume. Although it's paperback, the paper is thick, durable and lustrous, and the photography is simply superb. Short of seeing the exhibit of the army that traveled around the US recently, this is the closest you can come to the thing itself. (We saw it in DC.)Many of the photographs are close-ups, letting you see the incredible work that went into creating unique individuals, with massive detail in, for instance, pinned down hair. Curiously, this kind of detail in the heads is accompanied with much rougher work in the parts that were cast from moulds, like the hands, and - let's be honest - they had no idea how to make natural looking horses. Anyway, I can't emphasize enough how expertly all the statues, details and overhead scenes are shot here, with absolutely exquisite lighting. The army is treated, as it should be, like a piece of art, not just some piece of dusty archaeology. The pictures are accompanied by expert if uneven text by the Italian authors, explaining the finds and techniques used. There's the occasional fawning, politically correct tone reminiscent of Bertolucci's films (what is it with Italians and communist China?), but nothing too bad. Until they finally dig up old Qin's tomb itself, this is it!

Great illustrations, but poor setting of text makes it a difficult read.
I bought this book for my elderly mother who has been interested in the terracotta army for a number of years. Unfortunately, while the illustrations are numerous and compelling, the accompanying text is in very small, italic type and most of it is white printing on a dark background, making it a difficult read for anyone with less than perfect vision. Buy it for the pictures, but buy a different book if you intend to do any reading.

The paperback version of this book is equal to the hardback version except for the covers and the binding.
I just received my paperback copy of "The Eternal Army" today and I am astounded at the quality of the book for such a low price. I cannot add anything to what has been said in previous reviews except to say this to perspective buyers. Do not hesitate to purchase the paperback version of this book. Although I have not seen the hardback version the quality of the content and photographs could not be improved upon. Perhaps the hardback cover and the binding might improve on the longevity of the book but that's all. I might add that this book is a good resource for any China stamp collectors if you have an interest in the terra cotta soldiers stamps that were issued by China a few years ago.

Wonderful!
Saw the amazing exhibit at the Field Museum/Chicago a few weeks ago. Living in Chicago, I've seen many exhibits over the years and frequent our museums often. This was one of the most powerful and awe inspiring exhibits I've ever seen! I saw the book on sale at the gift shop afterward, and wanted to buy it, but had a long walk to the train station, then the train ride home, and the book is huge. I ordered it as soon as I got home :) The book does NOT disappoint. It's beautiful, with tons of detailed and high quality photographs of the pieces of the exhibit, along with an extensive history. This is a book I will keep forever, and read and re-read. And sometimes will just look at the amazing photographs and remember how I saw them oh so close. This is a no-brainer purchase.

Splendid book!
A lavishly illustrated, oversized volume, offering detailed description and interpretation of the Terracotta Army and other aspects of the tomb of the First August Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi. The first 40% of the book, itself well illustrated, appropriately provides historical perspective from the Shang and Zhou eras, thus context for the eventual unifying Qin Dynasty. Translated from the original Italian, but reads very nicely, apart from a few typos. Thoroughly enjoyable, and very informative. Recommended for anyone interested in world history, especially if you plan to see the Terracotta Army in person -- as I do!

Fabulous book, watch out for mail packaging.
Wonderful book with excellent photos of Terracota Army and very many additional items. It is soft back and should have been much better packed. It was only in a cardboard sleeve and part of the sticky wrapping had stuck to the cover of book. I thought I might have to send it back but I did manage to clean it with “Sticky Stuff”. Now book in good shape.JohnS Newbury

Fantastic pictures and sufficient text to give a reasonable overview ...
I bought this book (as opposed to another previously considered) on the basis of a review from another purchaser. They say 'A picture tells a thousand words...' and this is certainly true in this case. Fantastic pictures and sufficient text to give a reasonable overview of the subject matter and a little more general information. Perfect for most casual browsers and just about anyone not seeking an in-depth study of this amazing piece of history. The down side? I bought the book as a gift and have to give it away Such is life!
