Can you use this for small stainless steel work?

It works on stainless steel tattoo needles, but that is very small, hope that helps.

do you need solder or will this tin on its own

No you will need solder and silver solder is the best as it heats up and flows better.

It says for use with non lead solder but can i use this with actual lead solder?

Yes you can and many Plumbers do - just remember to use use Fernox Cleaner F3/F5 if you are using this on Central Heating System pipework to remove any residue(s). Also wear PPE as you MUST NOT get this spitting into your eyes nor rubbing your eyes if on hands... It is a great product and I've used it on Non Lead, Low Lead, 60/40 Lead and other alloy solders - very effective Flux.
