Thai Sticky Rice Steamer (basket only)

Believe it or not we could not find the Thai rice OR the cooker on Maui. Now I am in the desert and no problem. Found the pot in an Asian supermarket--but they did not have the bamboo steamer, go figure. I bought the aluminum pot in the store, then ordered the steamer from amazon. Came in a few days in a big box. It's a lot bigger than it looks, my daughter's friend thought it was a hat, lol. Great price, arrived quickly. Have made sticky rice two or 3 times already, was perfect. The basket is huge, have to force it under my stove vent which hangs kind of low... but you can wiggle it a bit and it fits. Just make sure you use a pot lid when you steam your rice. Lining the steamer with cheesecloth is not so easy, the cheesecloth falls down the sloped sides and anyway the rice was stuck to the cheesecloth, what a waste. Honestly was not worth the effort to use cheesecloth, the bamboo steamer is not THAT hard to clean. First time I soaked the rice overnight, second time all day. Both times came out great. We had it with bbq teriyaki salmon once, then with Thai curry the second time. Reheats good in steamer too. FYI: seems to take a LONG time to boil the water in that pot, very odd and at a high altitude our water boils fast. Don't put too much water in-- you don't want the rice sitting in water anyway.

I love this product.. Shipping was a little long but it was worth the wait once I got to make my sticky rice… I did notice that using the pot it started to stain black as if I had it on an open fire. Over all the appearance and quality was good.

Fit my steamer pot perfectly! Tip: Be sure that when you buy bamboo baskets that you boil them a couple of times before you actually cook with them!!! They need to be boiled to get out the dust and natural "icky" stuff that's in the bamboo along with any chemicals within them. You'll notice the water will turn super dark brown. After 2 or 3 rounds of boiling for an hour or so each time, it should be safe to go ahead and cook food in them. I use mine for sticky rice and since I don't like to have to scrape the bamboo after making rice, I use a layer of cheesecloth as a protective layer between the rice and the bamboo. Covering the top of the rice with the cheesecloth along with a pot lid over the top of it also helps keep the steam within the rice and it comes out sooooo yummy! The boiling tip goes for ANY bamboo basket steamer you buy from anywhere. It's not secluded to this seller, it's just something you should do to prevent nasty stuff from cooking into your foods and ruining the taste as well as being a possible health hazard from possible residual chemicals within the bamboo when using any kind of basket steamer.

I ordered two one was perfect the other seem to have black specks on it looks very similar to mold, cant return because it's out of the 30 day period so basically wasted my money on a product I cannot use cause it's not sanitary

This basket definitely does the job. Our family friends are from Laos and use this type of basket for their "sticky rice." I've been using it for a few years now - my only complaint is that the rice can get stuck in the bottom and it's practically impossible to get out - but it doesn't typically come off into new rice batches the next time around, so it's not a huge deal. (Meaning the old stuck rice doesn't come off when I make a new batch so it isn't getting mixed together).

Generally I go into the Dallas area to the Asian market when we need something authentic. This time I didn't want to make the drive so I ordered online. We had the pot already and just needed the basket but I saw this product was on sale and offered rice with it so I figured I'd get it as well. Our last basket finally had fallen apart. I'm sure it would have lasted longer had my children not used it for a boat. I am very satisfied with this product. I was shocked when I received it in 24 hours even though I had chosen the regular 2 day shipping that Prime offers. I immediately soaked some rice and steamed it. It cooked perfectly. I had read a review that mentioned the basket weave wasn't tight enough and rice fell through so I watched for that. I didn't have a problem at all. My husband is from Laos and is the one who taught me how to cook traditional food. He found nothing wrong with the basket or pot either and was thrilled we could get it online and not have to drive into Dallas. I think it's great these products are being sold online. Now if I could just find bean noodle, and oyster sauce, and fish sauce online!!

It was an ok product. When I rec'd it I could see little marks on the bamboos as though it was caused by termites on the bottom of the steamer.

Great purchase works amazing. I would buy it again, but it has lasted me so long the purchase was worth it.
