Hello, you can wipe the backpack with a wet towel and let it air dry; or you can put orange peels, grapefruit peels or lemon peels in your backpack, and usually leave it for a few days to get rid of the smell

Q: Is the size ok for overhead luggage on planes?

yes and no, you'd have to make sure you don't expand it fully. Depending on the airline, it needs to be under 55x40x20cm (ryanair) other airlines allow slightly bigger, so the only dimension that will be over that is the fully extended 26mm depth of the bag. There are straps to make this dimension shorter.
