Would it be able to hold a cymbal, lesser than a 20" ride, without difficulty?

Yes, I use mine for a 20" ride which doesn't get a lot of hammer but I have never had any problems with stability with it.

Has anyone also tried the similar pearl bc-830 stand (£18 dearer with 5* reviews)? i wondered how they compared. is the pearl stand worth the extra?

I bought this stand prior to getting a Pearl kit. If I am being totally honest the Pearl hardware is the weak link in my kit so not sure if you are paying for the name
