hi, if the shelves are spaced with equal spacing what height of storage container would they take on each shelf?

You can't evenly space them because of the attachments which connect the top and bottom. The best I could manage was 40cm + 40cm at the bottom, 37cm +34 cm at the top, measured from top of shelf to bottom of shelf support above, minus a bit of clearance to slide boxes in. I used boxes 30 cm high which fitted in comfortably anywhere. The slots on the vertical sections are at 3cm pitch so you could go, for example, to 40cm + 40cm + 40cm + 31cm

Can this be set up to have no shelf on ground level (i.e. no 'bottom' shelf) but instead have 2 shelves above that?

You decide where the shelves fix, so yes you could. But the shelves gives stability to the uprights so if your first shelf is too high it could lead to wobble - especially if the weight is greater on the top shelf than those below.

What is the thickness of the MDF ?
