Back to vinyl

I have a vinyl collection spanning over 50 years and 25 of those have involved loft storage. I decided to revisit and clean up those albums. They were in a bad state covered in mould and dirt. Using the Knosti machine I cleaned in batches of 15 which is what the rack holds. It is also important to take the time to rediscover these albums before moving on to the next batch. It is a labour of love. CAUTION do not use the Knosti fluid which leaves a residue and clogs the stylus. I fell for this only once. Instead buy a bottle of the Lart du son vinyl cleaning solution. This is my method.Fill the knosti machine with 500ml distilled water. Fill a spray bottle of 2% solution. So 4ml solution to 200ml distilled water for example. Clamp your disc and spray both sides and clean with a microfibre cloth then place in the machine and do about 20 revolutions to rinse the disc. Then place on rack to drain. After doing 5 discs I return to them and with a clean microfibre cloth gently wipe any excess water and return to the rack until completely dry. Continue until all 15 discs are done. Discard used fluid. Its not expensive. Then the most important bit. Clean and dust the vinyl sleeves and place each disc in a nice new inner sleeve. I used the Analogue works 70 GSM. This is probably the most expensive bit but worth it.The finished discs are perfectly clean. The amount of surface noise, skipping or jumping will depend on how badly they have been treated. The condition of my discs were a real challenge but I am very pleased with the results. There is also a 2 machine method which involves using the cleaning solution in one machine and the rinsing solution in the other but I have not tried this. It is a real pleasure to listen to these albums again and most of them sound better than the newer CD versions I have. The only downside is that I have started buying vinyl again which is an expensive hobby.

Really excellent

Excellent. Cleaned my vinyl that hadn't been used for 30 years. They're now like new. 😁

It's like renewing your entire record collection

This would seem to be an overpriced item. Some moulded plastic and some cleaning fluid at nearly £70! I reckon production costs would be about £1 and with the fluid not more than £5. But this is to miss the point of the value. I have several hundred vinyl LPs, some bought in the late 1950's and none since the 1990's when I started to switch to CDs. 60 year old records accumulate a lot of surface noise and the odd bit of damage and some of my most treasured possessions were too painful to play. I have now cleaned about 200 of them and I would say that well over 90% of them play as if they were brand new. 200 brand new CDs for an outlay of £67 is a fair bargain and of course I have the capacity to clean many more.I read many reviews before purchase. Some suggested some sophisticated means of use and varieties of cleaning fluids. I decided to start by doing exactly as per the manufacturers instructions and was delighted with the results. little to no residue was left on the stylus after play.It will be many weeks before I've cleaned everything; I'm only up to Dvorak so far, but I should mention that the transparency of the solo piano in Claudio Arrau's recording of Beethoven's "Emperor" Concerto is miraculous. 60 years after purchase his lightness of touch makes you disbelieve that the piano is a percussive instrument. the notes emerge from the now crystal clear silence of the background.Oscar Wilde noted that a cynic: " knows the price of everything but the value of nothing." This is a very very valuable piece of kit. I can't recommend it too highly

Worth it!

Brilliant product, easy to use and makes a surprising amount of difference to the sound quality.

Still the best on a budget

Yes it's over priced. Probably worth £40 at most. But that said, if you're on a tight budget and don't have 500 quid to spend on a vacuum thingy in gold guilt with mother of pearl inset, then this is the bbad boy for you. It drags all kinds of gunk out of those grooves. One think to watch, don't let the record dry on its own if you use the fluid that comes with it. Get a high quality microfibre cloth and get as much surplus fluid off as you can. Leave it to dry naturally and all kinds of dust and fibre can cling to it, leaving a furball on your stylus the first time you play it. Alternatively use a mixture distilled water (80%) and Isopropranol (20%). Many swear by this.

Decent results, but appears to be pre-used

The product itself works quite well. I've tested cleaning a few records that have gotten a bit grubby, and the sound quality after cleaning is noticeably better. You can hear everything clearly again. However, the model I received appears to be a return or ex-display. The tape holding the box shut had paper on it from the lid, indicating it had been opened previously. The record drying rack was missing completely, with the card box it was supposed to be in being empty. The cleaning unit itself also showed scuff marks on the top where the pieces holding the spinner in place meet the unit's body, something that would only happen if it had previously been put togetherThere was no indication of this in the seller description, but the condition of the machine indicates otherwise.
