Do you have to disassemble to fill or can you add water slowly from the top?

You just add the water, and do not have to take it apart. The bowl has worked very well for my dogs. It is a little a little larger than my other bowls which I also like. I do use the floating plate because we sometime have the bowl in the RV or the car and it keeps the water from spilling. Also, I have schnauzers and their beards don't get quite as wet with the floating plate.

Does this work for large dogs? I am concerned that my black lab won't be able to get his snout in the whole to get water.

The smallest dia. in the black ring is 116 mm (4.567 inch), plenty large enough for large dogs because they drink with their tong. Their snout won't be in the smallest opening unless maybe when the bow is nearly empty. We have two golden-lab mix sisters, large for their breed. 98 lbs and 102 lbs yet very lean. 2 yrs old they are still puppies fighting over everything. Even so, the Velcro prevented any tipping. The product works perfectly, no spills ever, only a few drips from their smiling faces. Hope this helps.

Does this help with messy drinkers? My lab gets water EVERYWHERE when he drinks his water.

yes, it does. The dog can only lick the water from the floating ring. Its a different story if they put the paws in it. I use it in the car too. Also, when its hot I fill it half way with ice cubes and the inner ring floats nicely on it. My shepherd use to stick her whole face into the dish and she can't do it with this bowl
