Calling All Quail!
This works great for AZ desert gambels quail. We have a couple hundred near our home that we feed every day and this call brings them in. So cool...

Not for valley quail
Good little quail call but unfortunately does not mimic valley quail - can’t get coveys to respond to the “Chicago” call. Also needs one hand to hold call and no loop for a strap - nice though

Worth every penny, a perfect performer. 2 sides to the call.
I have made several of my own calls and theyeve worked pretty well. This thing is amazing! Great response, quail will call back, survey their small area in search of the noise, hop branch to branch. One side of this call is a lower pitch which is great. It mimics a smart and shy older bird just calling out to see whos around. Or it can pass as a quail calling from far away. Blow once and short with the word hey! Thats a feeler. Then hit a hey and then a chicago. Thats a realistic build up. No bird just burts with noise unless its excited in a bad way. The other side of the call has a higher pitch. Its very common i hear a bird call hey very low, and a much higher pitched hey call back from another bird. Thats the two of them engaging and showing the other it hears it. They will build up and tantalize each other with louder bursts of hey and chi-ca-gos, progressivly repeating more phrases of chi ca gos. Most ive ever heard a bird extend its call is 2 heys and 5 times of chi ca gos. Hope this helps. Love this call. Would love to test another call from this company!

the best quail call -- still as good as 50 years ago
VERY effective for calling california valley quail. and simple to use. it is not like a duck call which has a steep learning curve and mot duck hunters scare off ducks by making wrong-sounding calls. this is the opposite: you can make a perfect call the first time you use it! just say 'chee-kwah-tuh" into it and that is the quail rallying call meaning 'all you birds come here to daddy'. i got my fist call of this type back around 1962, and thank goodness the calls haven't changed at all since then, still made from real wood with a perfect soun.

Newer isn't Better
When this was the Lohman quail call, every call was excellent. Now that these are Flambeau quail calls, they have been made rounder(fatter), and of the four I bought recently, one could not be made to sound like a quail, and two of the other three were pitched too high. I presume they are being manufactured by someone else these days, and probably cheaper, but they aren't as good. I resent buying four calls and having only one work. If there was an option, I would buy something else. Flambeau needs to save some money on wood and make them the same size as the Lohman calls. They all worked. When they work, they are the best quail calls available. I have popped off the ends of the calls and either tightened or loosened the rubber band to change the pitch, and replaced the rubber bands when necessary.

Works Great, Well Made but Directions are Lousy
It is well made, will last long. Directions are lacking in being specific. Learned to cup 1 hand around whistle when blowing. Another notable mention: Blow whistle thru the *Middle, not the end, if you want any sound to come out! If yu blow hard into the middle, you get a High Pitched yound Quail sound. Try saying "Chicago," thru whistle to get appropriate sound. Takes practice, but it works!

Kind of disappointed
Looks as though the radius on the two pieces of wood is incorrect on the one that I got. I've used these things for years and this one does not have the proper sound in my opinion.
