Does the PKS 55 have an intelligent brake system when trigger is released?

Not so far as I know. The blade stops turning gradually, after the trigger is released. The metal spring-loaded blade protector closes instantly the tool is removed from the job, allowing it to be put down on a surface, even if the blade has not come to rest.

I want to trim several soft wood doors to size. . Can this trim without splintering the surfaces of the wood and leave a smooth finish?

I have used mine to trim doors that have MDF panel skin and softwood inner frame. Finish was good. If yours are solid softwood I don't think you will have a problem. If needed plane a small chamfer on each cut edge. The other thing to consider is that this is at floor level. Good luck with your project.

If this item is 'corded electric' why does it say it needs a li - ion battery

The PK55 is corded and needs plugging in. The PK55A is cord free and has a lithium battery. Hope this helps.
