Child's Play (1988) [DVD] [1988]

I LOVE my Supernatural Serial Killers. This "Good Guy" is my Favourite
I wrote many reviews on this movie because it never fails to be the ultimate classic that will go down in history as the clever unforgettable supernatural suspense chiller. It is ideal if you are not into gore but more into the creepiness. The parents at the time secretly love this flick so their child would calm their greed for toys.I saw the commercials of the very first Child's play Movie and I remember them completely - the stunning special effects of the doll creeping with the mechanical head turning right around and the isolated kid, was later called Andy hollering for his Mother. I was nine years old at that time.I saw that movie on tape at 13 many years ago (under aged- naughty me!!) but could not wait to see it. Chucky was now the first Boogyman I ever watched.Brad Dourif whom I known from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest, Blue Velvet, Fatal Beauty, Dune and many countless films as I got older- he is one of the most finest performers I have ever seen, with his magnetic charisma and those huge wildly intense blue eyes to match, he is crazy handsome in this movie, and his outburst rage that even real life Serial Murderers exhibit is brilliant. Dourif hits the big time as Charles 'chucky' Lee Ray, the Voodoo practising Serial killer of Chicago who was gunned down in a toy store by bewildered Detective Norris (Sarandon)and betrayed by his partner-in-crime Eddie Caputo.Charles made a promise that he will get revenge on the ones that 'done him in' and found a Good Guy doll to exchange his soul whispered a Voodoo incantation in the name of 'Damballah Wedo' (a west African, and Haitian Snake God), lighting struck the toy shop and the police found Ray dead - bet they thought it was over and celebrated by munching on Bear claws and donuts collections- RIGHT? Nope Wrong. In comes along little Andy Barclay - sweet Darling' angel, but he whines about wanting the latest craze - em yes! you guessed it - and you know that he is gonna get what he wants alright! unfortunately Karen Barclay (Hicks) buys the 'special' doll at cheapo bargain from a Homeless Guy. At least she does not have to worry about batteries because the doll is 'more alive' than expected, with a diminutive height and Brad Dourif's inimitable Booming voice. And ratty Auntie Maggie (Peterson) gets it, and takes a dive from the forty storey building. and then it is Eddie's turn to be shish kabab in a exploding House! The body counts are rising, and the truth about Charles Lee Ray is mounting but more unbelievers are added to the equation. Until they see Chucky 'is alive' and eat their words (or die so to speak). It is a Scary movie, with great scenes of Chicago, and Chucky has a vehement vengeance and will not stop at nothing with its perished body ashed from flames and blue eyes peering out creeping towards Andy makes you feel like a kid wanting to cry out to your Ma. what a Nightmarish Film - unmissable, this cool movie deserves praise.I don't care what people say.Hail Chucky!

YES IT WAS CHUCKY!
So here we have eighties classic horror at its best.I will be brief in my story comments just not to spoil viewing.Basically a dying villain inhibits a doll that is then given to a young innocent child and thats when everythingturns sour. The plot is quite straightforward and i believe its an asset, while the creepy factor is sky high with incredible special effects even by todays standards. The film is utterly entertaining with no signs of dating and is appealing to viewers beyond the genre. The cast is very good headed by the excellent Brad Durif,Catherine Hicks and adorable Alex Vincent under the expert guidance of director Tom Holland .The only major minus i could find is the appalling MGM/20th C.FOX release that is more like a bad vhs tape, very grainy, dark with terrible colours that make the film hard to watch. My next move will be to get a blu ray version to really enjoy the film because it deserves it.Well to conclude this is cult status,so enjoy with a good quality version.

Great film
The start of the film begins with the film's villain being shown trying to escape the police. Fatally wounded, he breaks into s toy store to escape them. Running out of options he looks for a suitable toy to transfer his soul into and finds a Good Guy doll to do so.The store bursts into flames as a result of his voodoo actions and is destroyed.Looking for a cheap birthday present for her son, Karen Barclay buys the seemingly normal looking doll, unaware it possesses the soul of a killer. After the doll is given to Andy it soon telling him secrets that no ordinary doll would tell and it is up to Andy to convince the adults that Chucky is evil.

A Horror Classic That Completely Deserves Its Status
I adore 'Child's Play'. Sure, its production isn't of modern blockbuster quality, but for its time and its budget, the result is very satisfying. There are a number of very memorable moments throughout, Chucky is a very funny and charismatic villain, and Andy is such a lovable protagonist. The plot's pretty simple but that's not a criticism. It isn't needlessly convoluted like some of the '80s horrors, yet is enough to create a thrilling 90 minutes. I highly recommend this classic to any movie enthusiast, even those outside of the horror genre, as 'Child's Play' doesn't relish in jumpscares or traditional tropes of horror, not even being that scary at all, and definitely distinguishes itself from the onslaught of monotonous slashers that surrounded it in the '80s and '90s.

Hi I'm Chucky!! Wanna play?!?!
The Film: Child's PlayYear Made: 1988Overview: The Lakeshore Strangler is chased down by a detective. The detective shoots the famous killer and he dies, or does he? Determined for revenge, even after death, the killer is able to send his spirit into a doll right before he dies. A determined mother finally gets her child the doll that that he thought he always wanted. The child soon finds out that his doll named Chucky is not your average play time doll as will soon be discovered!Package: 5 Stars When I bought this DVD, I had not idea this package would be so cool. This is not just a regular cover, it comes with a hologram cover with Chucky on the front. When you turn the cover slightly, Chucky will just look at you with a innocent look on his face. When you move it some, he will look at you with wide eyes and a knife will appear in his hand! This alone was such a great surprise to receive. The cover slides off and then a normal looking DVD is inside. The DVD itself looks cool with graphics on the disc itself. The holder holds the disc in place very well, and yet it is the push button pop out kind, so it's easy to remove from holder also. I wish all holders were of this same type, as it would make taking out DVDs a whole lot easier. The DVD itself includes the trailer for the film as well as some cast information. There was no insert at all included when I opened the case, but all and all, this is a very nice package.Spook Meter: 3 Stars If you enjoy the whole killer doll concept as much as I do, if you enjoy a little humor mixed in as well, your going to love Child's Play. This film has some spooky scenes too it and it's very fun to watch. It's not a super scary film, but what makes this all come together so well is young Andy, as well as the whole look of Chucky. This makes for a scary, and a believable concept that flows really well in the pace of events that occur as you watch this film. All the little details, really add to the creepy feeling. The TV going on when Chucky decides that he will watch the 9 'O' Clock news, I love that part! It's creepy and is a nice slow build up to more things that occur later as the pace picks up gradually faster. I don't want to give away many details. One of the very best things that you will love is when Chucky laughs! It sticks with you, long after the film has ended and in this case, that's a great thing.Gore/Violence Meter: 3 Stars. There is some blood/gore, but if you looking for a high blood splatter gore fest, you won't find it here. This gets ranked 3 stars for mainly violence. If people and a doll being shot, a few fairly mildly graphic stabbings with a little blood don't bother you, then you will be fine watching Child's Play.Profanity Meter: 3 Strikes. There is a fair amount of bad language in this film that maybe offensive to some viewers.Sexual Meter: 1 Strike. This film is pretty much a 1 star on the sexual meter. There is zero nudity, zero bed scenes, no make out stuff what so ever. I will note one tiny part that shows nothing, but is on the suggestive side. A woman tries to ask a man for information regarding the doll. The man wants her to pay for his information, she tries to give him money but he wants her body instead. He pushes her and the suggestive part is that he wants to sexually assault her, when she is then saved by the detective. There is nothing shown, but it's something that I just wanted to give a note of warning too about that one part.Final thoughts: I love this film! what can I say, I'm a huge Chucky fan. This is a film that I can watch over and over again. It's fun/scary/funny horror all mixed into one film that leaves you wanting more and thinking it ended way to soon because it was just so fun to watch. If you love horror films, you can't go wrong with this one. Give this a try, you will love Chucky! Overall, this is a 5 Star film without a doubt! I must note also that yes I would love to see Child's Play on widescreen as well as other reviewers have stated also. This version is full screen but don't worry. I read recently that a 20th anniversary special edition of Child's Play is coming soon! Don't give up hope, Chucky is going to celebrate his birthday and I'm sure he will get the widescreen treatment alone with some new extras that is sure to please any Chucky fan. Whatever you do, I suggest any fan of Chucky should for sure pick up this full frame version as well though. Trust me when I say, the hologram cover is worth the price in itself.
