Is this continuously variable or am i locked into fixed positions for low, medium and high?

It is continuesly variable, however i t is not precisely graduated. For instance turning the dial 10% doesn 't equate to a 10% change in speed. Play it by ear. You can live with this. Over the years I have bought alot of speed controls. They all died fairly quickly. This model keeps working just fine. I would buy one again. For me, 5 stars! Bryan, lifetime woodworker.

Will this work on a 14" bandsaw?

I did a little searching and found that people have been using these on all kinds of tools - sanders, routers, miter saws, table saws, angle grinders, mini lathes, even a sewing machine. One reviewer said "Works great on all brush type motors.........drops speeds by a third to half and even has a full power switch for instant speed increase!!" So while I haven't used it on a band saw (I haven't used it at all) it sounds like a pretty good bet that it would.

Will this work on a bench grinder?

I have not tried it but i don't see why it would not work on a bench grinder . I would say Yes it will work.
