"What's the hook, the twist within this verbose mystery?"
I have a new CD obsession. I saw a promotion for Decemberunderground while watching South Park. I was impressed by the music clip. I think it was "Miss Murder." It had a 1980s sound which is my favorite musical era and I recently have become interested in new bands who demonstrate 1980s influences. Well, now that I have this CD, it has been living in my computer-side CD player and car stereo. It has an interesting sound with surprisingly complex choruses. Vocalist Davey Havok is incredible and the musicianship is superb. This album is an experience, like traveling through the snow in the places pictured in the booklet, but not on jet skis but, rather an old-fashioned horse and carriage--that flies!"Prelude 12/21": I didn't plan it this way, but I'm writing this review on 12/21. This track is a perfect opener. It is dainty and soft at the beginning, then rises with pounding drums and ends with a powerful crescendo. It prepares the listener for what's to come."Kill Caustic": The heaviest track here! Not for the fainthearted. The lyrics can describe it better than I can: "So now you'll love these screams, what's left of me." "I was the one to ride that dirty ride that is turning so fast now I cannot hold on but, at this pace, who would want to." I, for one!"Miss Murder": Now for something much more accessible. Catchy, upbeat track. I like how the chorus is actually one sentence sang in three verses."Summer Shudder": I love this track! The chorus is awesome! Rocks with addictive hooks!"The Interview": Slow and beautiful. The chorus perks things up a bit but it is still very restrained. The guitar that comes in during the chorus is amazing. Pious organ closes this work of art."Love Like Winter": The best part is the chorus. The backing vocals kick in and it is quite powerful."Affliction": Now we're rocking! A screaming, heavy track like "Kill Caustic." The guitar and bass fly! The chorus is actually tame and accessible but Davey Havok builds it up to some screams to keep the intensity high. The bridge is great! When they sing, "So stay sweetly numb. Maintain lifeless love," Wow!"The Missing Frame": A soft, instrumental interlude follows the preceding track. This track rocks but is not heavy. It is upbeat and accessible."Kiss and Control": Intense screams with a softer side. I guess the title matches the feel of this song: "City lights, like rain, dance and explode.""The Killing Lights": The best part is the killer (but all too brief) guitar solo. Awesome!"37mm": Rock song with a powerful beauty. One of my favorites. Soft verses, catchy chorus, piano bridge--Everything is wonderful."Endlessly, She Said": Appropriate song to end the album: "I will wait for you," she said, "endlessly."

Excellent service!
I have been looking for this CD for a couple of years (ever since my kids wore it out) and when I saw it was available I had to get it. The quality (no broken case) and service were GREAT! It even came a week earlier than expected!

Why is everyone saying this CD's so bad?
I love it. This is probably one of my favorite CDs from AFI and all time.(My other fave AFI's are Sing the Sorrow and the Art of Drowning.) It's a great balance of music, with songs to satisfy everyone.Anyways, here's my rating of the songs on this CD:Prelude 12/21 10/10 - I love this...song. It's short, but it's an awesome into. It's one of their best intos, if not the best.Kill Caustic 9/10 - Great metal song. Kinda screamo, but I like it a lot.Miss Murder - 9/10 - Just love it. The video rocks, too.Summer Shudder - 8/10 - The chorus is cool. The rest of the song's decent.Love Like Winter 104848935874.58/10 - Combined with the video, this is one of my favorite songs ever (by AFI, and by anyone).Affliction - 7.5/10 - Eh, this one's okay. I like when they say "Lover, I am loveless."The Missing Frame - 8/10 - This one's good. Nothing too special, but Davey's voice sounds nice in this song.Kiss and Control - 7.6/10 - I like the thing at the end where Davey says "We'll burn like stars." I also like the screamo chorus. The Killing Lights - 8/10 - Catchy chorus. Don't really understand the lyrics.37mm - 10/10 - Sort of the beginning of Blaqk Audio (Davey and Jade's electronica side project). Amazing!Endlessly, She Said - 10/10 - The song's awesome!!!. On the ending note (when Davey says, "Endless...ly.) The 'ly' makes me cringe. But other than that, it's soo cool!

Continual Growth
I still consider myself a brand new AFI fan. I came to discover the band because of Davey's involvement in DREAMCAR. In a short 5 months I have purchased Black Sails in the Sunset, The Blood Album, Burials, Sing the Sorrow and now Decemberunderground.I must say that this is a really good album. It had been interesting listening you the bands progression, both vocally and musically. The song writing sounds much more polished as well.I'm a classically trained musician so I will say that in my listening to the albums in a short of reverse order, I can hear hints of songs that would become other tracks. For example, the opening of "The Killing Lights" sounds just like "Hidden Knives" to my ear. However, I digress. You will no be disappointed in this record. I listened to it back to back 3 times and could not get enough of it. The boys have certainly gained a fan for life in me.

Doesn't Compare
As a stand along album, Decemberunderground isn't bad. I can see why lots of newer fans have picked it up and enjoyed it. However, as an older AFI fan I can't help but compare it to their olders stuff, and in all honesty, it doesn't even come close. It doesn't have the aggressive punk styling of their first albums, nor even the dark, romantic lyrics that came in to play on 'Black Sails' and 'Art of Drowning'. It doesn't even compare to 'Sing the Sorrow', the album which many die-hard fans branded as a sellout album. In actual fact, for the first time in their career, AFI are now being branded as emo as a result of this album. This being said, there ARE a few tracks that I enjoy off Decemberunderground. While I personally can't stand the almost poppy singles; 'Miss Murder' and 'Love Like Winter', I do find 'Kill Caustic', 'Affliction' and 'Endlessly She Said' to reflect the bands earlier work. In addition, both of the (so-called new) UK bonus tracks, 'Rabbits are Roadkill' and the cover of Nine Inch Nails' 'Head Like a Hole' are also worth listening to.Overall, I would recommend buying this album, but if you are a fan of AFI's older music make sure you don't expect too much from it.
