Nice set
This is what you would expect from a foam set. It can't take a lot of roughhousing but it stands up to some good play time.

Above Average
Overall my littles have enjoyed these. The set comes with 2 swords and 2 shields, which makes it perfect for sibling play or for friends to join in the fun. However, I was disappointed to find that the swords had already been ripped after only a few days of use. While the foam material is soft and safe for kids to play with, it doesn't seem to be as sturdy as advertised. I was hoping for the swords to last a bit longer, especially since they are designed for kids to play with.Despite this issue, my kids are still having a blast with the set. The swords and shields are a great size for their age. If the foam material was a bit more durable, I would have given this set a full 5 stars. Overall, if you're looking for a fun pirate-themed toy set for your kids, this is a good option, but just be aware that the swords may not be as sturdy as you'd like.

No recommended
Last December, I received a set of fun pirate hats, so I thought I'd add some play swords to the mix, and I jumped at the chance to review these.OK, why can't I recommend these swords? The first thing I did when these arrived was to try them out. If you are playing and you try to stab someone, the swords bend easily, causing no harm, but if someone whacked someone with a tomahawk type stroke, something very different happens. You can give/receive a pretty darned hard whack. I mean, I thought, OK, I'll simulate my grandchildren (ages 4-7) playing with these, and hit my own arm about as hard as they are likely to, AND IT HURT!!!!!!These are completely unyielding when used with a downward stroke.I don't even want my grandchildren to see these, and I don't feel good about donating them to a place like Goodwill, so they are, sadly, headed straight for the trash. This makes me sad, because I really wanted to like and use these with the grandkids.IMO - unsafe for unsupervised young children.1 star

Perfect fun for a pair of aspiring pirates.
I ordered this pair of foam swords and shields for my two grandsons. Funny times change but some things remain the same. I remember playing sword fighting when I was there age. We saw the pirate life in the movies whereas today, it takes place played in a game on a monitor. The free life of a pirate righting the wrongs as he sees them and making his own rules. After watching on the screen, the attraction is still there, to be a pirate and try your hand at sword fighting. Only we made our own swords form sticks and small piece of board. Unfortunately, the wood swords were not so hand and arm friendly. My hands took many hits. These swords and shield are made from semi-ridged foam. They look like the real thing and are sized for children. Each sword is colored different from the other and each has its own unique and matching shield. The swords are about 21" long and 4 1/2" wide at the widest point. They are about 3/8" thick. The foam is a fairly dense closed cell foam which will not absorb water. It's not brittle and can be bent in half without breaking. If you test it by swishing it back and forth, the sword blade does bend slightly but during play fighting they work pretty well. It's pretty tough and should take a beating. But if someone or something gets hit during the play, it should be no big deal. But, like bouncing a ball, sword fighting should be done outside. The sword and shields we received are exactly as described on the webpage. We're very happy with what we received and know the grandkids will love them. Unlike our wooden swords, there shouldn't be any pirate tears during the duels. And they include a shield which we never had, and all in all they look much more realistic. Well worth the money we spent. So, these are good fun that makes a good gift. Its sure to bring a smile to any young child's face. Just be ready for a fight.

Solid, fun set!
Update: Still going strong 11 months later and my son plays with it constantly!!——My 4-year-old son currently has a pirate obsession and has been using butter knives as swords... I decided this would be an improvement for everyone involved. Thankfully, my son was soooo excited to see these and eagerly played with them immediately. The sword and shield are both made of thick foam that is sturdy enough to be satisfying to play with, but isn't really painful if you get hit by it. The strap on one of the shields is bigger than the other, which is helpful if an adult and child are playing together. My son asked me to order another set so we'd have a sword and shield for dad as well, so suffice to say he's a big fan of these. They are big enough that they can be satisfyingly played with by older kids, too. It's worth noting that it does have a bit of a foam smell, but that's par for the course with foam, and I'm sure will dissipate over time. Very, very happy with this set!

Fun times with battling children
It was great watching the kids play for a bit. These are thematically fantastic. The colors are vibrant and well-printed on the foam. Now… it’s foam so we kind of knew this would happen, but a few good whacks and the foam will bend- and then it’s structure is kaput because you can’t really bend it back and keep the strength. They seemed good at first- a nice dense foam, but if it’s going to be a hard foam like this, it doesn’t really soften the blow if you get smacked in the face anyway. Might as well have been hard plastic. Maybe it could have kept its integrity if it were rounded. If you’re looking for something for less injury, better stick to inflatables.
