In 2021 I purchased an Orbi system (RBK753 or RBK753S which is the membership club equivalent) and it worked fine for a while, but it had one flaw that used to drive me crazy: Whenever there was a need to reboot the router, it would take 1 to 2 DAYS for my 10 nest cameras to sync and for all of them to be online again. After putting up with this for 2 years I had enough and after 2 decades of an exclusive relationship with Netgear, I decide to open myself up and go back to the router dating scene to see what had changed in 2 decades. To my surprise, apparently Netgear is no longer king, and this particular ASUS router was included in the top 5 router rankings on every publication and established website out there. Sometimes it would be ranked #1 sometimes #3 but it would always be in the top 5. So I purchased it. Going from a Netgear Orbi system with 5 satellites (6 if you count the router itself), I was curious as to how much of my 4000sqft home a single router could cover. My goal was, if possible, to do away with Mesh systems. Netgear also had a flaw where despite broadcasting the same SSiD on all satellites, some clients still could differentiate between the one they originally connected to and an identical satellite broadcasting the same SSiD in other parts of the house. Some of my light switches would even see the same SSiD listed several times despite technically being the same network. So I installed the ASUS RT-AX86U PRO and even though it didn’t cover the entirety of the 4000sqft, it did cover a solid 50%. Technically I was able to see and connect to its SSiD from anywhere in the house but in some far corners the signal would not be a solid or steady. I knew I was asking too much of a single router since my previous Orbi alone with no satellites could barely cover 20% of my home so the fact that this one was pushing 50% it was a huge accomplishment. So I decided to order another RT-AX86U PRO and add it to the first one as an iMesh node. In case you’re not familiar AiMesh is the proprietary ASUS technology that allows you to seamlessly add other ASUS products as Mesh network nodes to your main router. Just the future proofing benefits alone make this a brilliant concept. So once I added the second RT-AX86U PRO to AiMesh, with 2 clicks, the remaining part of the house that I was having issues with now had a rock solid signal. Not only that but the 4 LAN ports on that second router acting as a node were active! And allowed me to hardwire several legacy devices in that room for unparalleled speed. I still had 2 nest cameras in a far corner of the property that were actually out of the house in my backyard and only operated in the 2.4 ghz range and were struggling to connect to the network (understandable since now I was not only asking my router to broadcast successfully at that distance but also to penetrate siding and insulation and the odd slab of concrete which are tougher for a wireless signal to penetrate than the drywall inside the house). At 200 bucks a pop my wallet was a bit reticent to add a 3rd RT-AX86U PRO, so I settled for an ASUS RP-AX58 AiMesh extender. At only 80 bucks, if this thing really did what it said it did, which was integrating itself into my AiMesh network, talk to the other routers in the fast 5ghz channel and rebroadcast that data in the far corner of the house both in the 5Ghz and also in the 2.4 GHz frequency that is the only one my aging nest cameras could comprehend, it was a no brainer. And guess what: It did. So using 2 RT-AX86U PRO routers, one as a main and the second one as an AiMesh node, and one ASUS RP-AX58 AiMesh extender, I was now able to flawlessly cover my 4000sqft home. Something that with the Netgear Orbi it used to take 6 satellites to do. And the best part, if I ever needed to reboot the router, all my nest cameras would come back online within a minute. Not 2 days. I am extremely happy with my purchase and considering the 2 routers I just added to my network are top of the line, I expect to be able to continue to purchase the latest and greatest ASUS router every few years and use all existing hardware as AiMesh nodes.

Upgraded from previous Asus router RT-AC87R that was probably bought around 2015. With so many more devices connected, the old router simply didn't have enough horse power. Connectivity was suffering, with devices falling off or taking forever to connect. Also, started noticing buffering on video streaming. Have been running the new Asus router (RT-AX86U Pro (AX5700)) for a full week now, and am totally impressed. All the connectivity issues are gone, and the range is amazing! I have a large house with multiple devices OUTSIDE (cameras, light bulbs, outlets - all from Wyze) and they all stay connected now with no problems whatsoever. I have one camera running on an extender, but doubt if I even need it anymore. All devices inside connect no problem, and wi-fi range even upstairs/downstairs in remote corners is no issue at all. Paired with an updated Motorola modem (MB8600) I got last year, I am now (finally) able to take advantage of the 1G internet connection coming into my house. As you can see on the picture from my phone (!), I am running at 950 Mbps down and 50+ Mbps up. Truly amazing! Previously, my hardwired PC was lucky to get to 550-600 Mbps, and my phone on wi-fi was WAY lower. Setup was a breeze (especially since I was familiar with Asus already), and the phone app works really well, especially now that you can connect remotely now even when away from home to monitor. I am not that techy (slightly above average), so if I can figure this out, so can you. Just keep your wi-fi name and password the same, and all your devices will reconnect quickly as soon as you fire up the new router....presto! I was worried I was going to have to reconnect 60+ devices, but they all connected fine. Worst case, you may have to restart a couple devices which is fine - just didn't want to have to go through entire setup process. If you're an over-analyzer like me, stop your search and just go with this model. You won't be disappointed! I purchased in January 2024 and did not receive any compensation for the product or this review. I rarely write reviews, but was so impressed and pleased with this product that I wanted to share!

By far the best router I have ever owned 2 year revuew, I have been running this thing hard , daaaaaily and 24hrs per day for near 2 years and it has never once crashed, froze hung up, overheated, dead ports nothing negative to say atallllll. I've ran or added many custom firmware to this and it runs em like factory such as merlin. The signal output on the wifi is fantastic , my setup is in a small bedroom at the end of the house I can go downstairs in the darn basement next to the washing machine and still get about 87mb/s off my 1gig fiber connection. Or go outside and upto an acre away I'm still connected ... in the car ... driving Absolutely fantastic level of quality in build , feature packed and reliability that I highly recommend you buy. Wait for a deal there's always one going and grab one as soon as you see one you won't regret it. The value and bang for buck is well worth every cent. Very high amount of vpn compatibility and a very easy to use or even force into open nat for seemless matchmaking and server reliability when gaming on your favorite consoles or off the pc itself. Not that it matters much but the anesthetics are also very edgy and modern approach to what can at times be just a ugly plastic box like tplink would have done.

I've been using the ASUS router for a little over a month now and have been very happy with the performance and features. The router supports 15 wireless devices in a two story house with two devices being heavy gaming PCs. The initial setup and configuration was easy and took no time to get up and running Latency and throughput have both been good with no complaints from any home users. I had one slight issue getting a Brother printer to get a wireless DHCP address from the router, but it was probably the outdatedness of the printer and not the routers fault. Once I switched to WPS setup it connected fine. The router's admin portal gives you a ton of configuration options, security features and reports which is nice. I also like the free security they give you via TrendMicro. Overall very happy with my purchase.

I purchased this router because my previous one was a bottleneck to my network through Spectrum. I pay for 600Mbps & previously only got around 200-250Mbps and noticeably bad latency & buffer bloat while gaming (Fortnite). This RT-Ax86U Pro was the solution for that. Port forwarding, QoS, and other beneficial settings are done with just a few clicks & there's basically nothing that you can't configure manually + Added (Game Modes) & device prioritization. Updates & reboots / resets are easily done through the Asus router website. I still can't get an A+ on waveform buffer bloat, but that's because it's configured for gaming & not web-browsing, but besides that, this is definitely worth the $$. I went from average 50-80 Ping on Fortnite to around 20-30 Ping after this router's firmware was updated and configured. My Mbps also went from ~200 to 600+ (more than what I pay for) and the WIFI strength around my house has improved drastically. The ping improvement alone justifies the price in my situation & I will add that I am hardwired with cat6e cables & I210-T1 nic. This came sealed & packaged well and it seems to be solid quality. Time will tell with this router but I'd say it's an easy pick for anyone that wants lower latency while gaming for a decent price.. compared to Ax88U Pro & wifi7 routers.

I wouldn't exactly call it a gaming router, but OK if you do. Installation wasn't that difficult. It was a replacement for an earlier ASUS router. I wanted to use my old IP addresses (192.168.y.xxx. (new router wanted a different block 192.168.z.xxx). But with some persuasion, I got what I wanted. This router has a little bit longer range that my old ASUS. The AX86U has Mesh router support, which I am now using. I had some trouble with obtaining/holding links to local devices. I had to reset the AX86U several times. I suspect that my ISP noticed my new router on their modem and decided to hassle me. After a few days, the router kept my network devices and kept it's settings. (My ISP raised my fee by $2 per month, the very next billing.)

Edit: Original rating was 2 stars. I have since dropped it to 1 star. Reason: After only 3 weeks, I am now experiencing the problem so many others have stated with this unit. it shows it is connected to my fiber modem/internet, but there is no internet. I now have had to reboot the unit twice in a little over a week. I cannot recommend this router. Original Review: This is long, but worth the read. Also, read all the other negative reviews concerning USB storage access and QOS issues. As the title say, this is a good "router". Im not perfect, but I have been doing this for the better part of 30yrs, so this is by no means, my first rodeo. While Ive used a lot of Asus products over the years (motherboards, sound and video cards etc...) this is my first Asus router. I am NOT impressed. I was replacing my TP-Link AX3000 router with this Asus. I was more than happy with the TP-Link, especially being able to use the USB port on it, as NAS access. I had a 4TB 2.5" SSD in a powered USB3 enclosure, hooked to the USB port on the TP-Link. I bought this router and paid over twice as much for it, as I paid for the TP-Link, hoping more money meant better quality and longer life span. I got the Asus setup with my 600Mb fiber internet with no problem. The Asus definitely has more power for wireless, as I am able to max out my internet wirelessly on my laptop, while sitting on the deck.... about 40' from the router and through 3 walls. I was also able to do this while dropping back on channel width, which was impressive. The router handles throughput on LAN transfers among my computers slower than the TP-Link did, but still "decent". Now, for the 4 HUGE issues for me and my use case: 1) The USB access. When I plugged in the same drive, in the same USB enclosure, into the USB port on the Asus, I couldnt see the files on the root of the drive. I could only see the folders. Dont know why, dont care why. Thats unacceptable for me. 2) When setting up my user access to the USB drive on the TP-Link, I was able to create my user/password, and give my "user" full R/W access to the entire drive. Not so on the Asus. I was able to create my user with no problem, but no way to give the "user" full R/W access to the drive. I had to view the folders on the drive, and give each individual folder R/W access for my user. If I created a new folder on the drive, I then had to go back into the router settings, and give my user R/W access to that folder. And as mentioned above, for some reason, I cant see the single files on the root of the drive like I could on the TP-Link, so I couldnt set any type of access for them. Again, unacceptable for me! 3) When I did access the drive through the routers USB port, the transfer rates were abysmal! I would average transfer speeds of 35MB/s up to the drive, and 70MB/s down, through the TP-Link. The Asus averaged a whopping 12MB/s up and down, with the same exact settings. Inexcusable and unacceptable! This is an issue with the USB access, as LAN transfers between computers (through the Asus router) are higher than this. 4) I went to turn on the "Adaptive QOS", got everything set the way I wanted it, and hit the "Apply" button. When I did, a screen popped asking me to Agree/Disagree with my information being sent to Trend Micro. It stated that by using SEVERAL functions of the router, that I agreed to the "Trend Micro End User License Agreement", and allow them to see and collect my information. Ummmm..... NO!!!! So I cant use SEVERAL advertised functions of this router, without allowing a 3rd party (that I want nothing to do with) to spy on me? I think NOT! If you disagree, it removes all the settings you just set, and changes everything back to how it was, and you cant use that function. Then it says if you dont want to share your info/settings with Trend Micro, you can go into the privacy settings, and disable sharing that info. BUT, the privacy area only mentions disabling sharing with Asus, it doesnt mention Trend Micro anywhere. Plus, you still have to agree to the Trend Micro End User License, whether you "withdraw" or not. It also says:.... "* Please note: Clicking “Withdraw” here may result in the inability to update to the latest firmware version and unable to receive the most up-to-date protection on your ASUS Router; However, to protect the security of your router and ensure the compliance with laws, for upgrades addressing important security issues or meeting legal/regulatory requirements , those upgrades will still be downloaded and installed automatically".... Are you kidding me? If I withdraw, I may not be able to update the firmware, but Asus will download and update my device automatically???? I think not! I am tired of buying devices (NOT services) and having the manufacture tell me how/when/where/why I can use the device. Not to mention, accessing my device and changing things, without my knowledge, let alone my permission. Call me old fashion, but I believe "I" should be in control of my devices, and nobody should be accessing them, let alone changing anything, at any time, without my knowledge and permission!!! For the average home/user (unless youre a huge power user or gamer) save $80 and buy the TP-link AX5400 (AX73). If you do order this router, be aware of all this, before you order!!!!
