The best book on lighting a movie I have come across!

Full colour all the way through - the way nature intended! And the illustrations are very good. This is an excellent book. Read, learn and inwardly digest every inch of this book and then go on set and hopefully watch how what you have learnt from this book is put into practice!Unlike most books on making movies, Landau actually has walked the walk and knows precisely and exactly what he is talking about. He opens the student's eyes to the various 'tricks-of-the-trade' needed to get that perfect 'Hollywood-Look' or that 'Dutch-Masters-Look' or to build tension through a 'Film Noir' atmosphere. If a student actually gets to go on-set with one of the greats, he will be exposed to some, but not all, the techniques and artistry described in this book. The same is true for college courses and the like. The fact that Landau covers it all, means that the student really gets to taste and read about all the various ways of lighting a movie, a sitcom, or a two-reeler short.

Amazing!

Amazing book! Detailed, academic, inspiring. Few lighthearted comments make it a smoother read, but academic integrity certainly persistent throughout.

Not relevant to the UK film industry

I didn't find this book a great deal of use to me - it is written from a US point of view, so the terminology, jargon, roles in the industry, and even some of the lighting techniques and safety precautions are not appropriate to the UK or European film and TV Industry. I speak as a veteran in UK Broadcasting and I now lecture in media practice at University. Also, I found the images were poorly printed - too dark, making them appear under-exposed! Too dark, sometimes, even to see the lighting techniques they are supposed to be illustrating, and from productions I'd never heard of or viewed. If you're not US-based, give it a miss.
