I bought this as a sun hat for an 86 year old lady, yup... she's looking pretty darn fly ;)

Will the mesh crown protect my head from sunburn - i’m folliclely challenged on top - or is it only the brim that provides spf50?

It's only the brim that's spf50. The top and sides are thin and see through when held up to the light. Definitely won't offer as much sun protection for the top of your head.
