Review: Do like this film and have been looking for it on 4k for a while. Frustratingly it's only been available as part of the 'Jack Ryan set' up until now so when I saw it was finally being released on its own, I jumped at the chance. Having said that, if I'm being honest, I was a bit unsure of whether it would live up to my expectations or not. I have found that 4k discs, especially of older films, can vary a bit in quality. I was recently left slightly underwhelmed by Spiderman 2 because while the picture was good, the level of film grain was seriously distracting. I get that it's something that is a result of shooting on film and generally don't consider myself a 'grain hater' - I actually prefer leaving it in to applying excessive DNR (digital noise reduction) - but what I don't quite get is how it can vary from movie to movie, if both were shot on film. Unfortunately, on Spiderman 2 it was like a swarm of gnats in places (which never came up in any review I read) and because THFRO is more than 10 years older, I was a bit worried it would be a similar story. Well, I'm glad to say I was wrong. For whatever reason the grain is far less pronounced and the detail level in some scenes is astonishing (at least it was to me). I was honestly marvelling at close-ups of Scott Glen's face, as Captain of the USS Dallas. Unfortunately the studio didn't take the opportunity to upgrade the soundtrack to Dolby Atmos, however it's less of an issue than I thought it would be, because while it's still 'only' 5.1, it's Dolby True HD, which, unlike Dolby digital, is lossless (not compressed) and that meant that the soundtrack was crisp and weighty and while I was watching it in 'pseudo' Dolby Atmos (via My AVR's upmixer) I really did not feel like I was missing out, which is not the case with upmixed Dolby Digital. All in all, a great experience and worth getting!
