She’s detached whilst also being approachable and surprisingly easy to talk to.
I was introduced to Vera by my sister and was initially reluctant to watch. However, since I first saw the programme, i’m totally hooked! I can’t get enough of her. I love her character which in many ways I can relate to. Also, she’s a clever, powerful woman in a man’s world. Whilst not being a feminist, I do feel that there should simply be equality in terms of jobs, pay and working conditions. I’m delighted with the DVD’s i’ve bought and am looking forward to sitting down with a glass of wine to watch them all, thank you.

Superb - Highly recommended
"Ahh, it's ol' Vera" is the cry when this comes on the tele. Thoroughly enjoy it on TV and enjoy it even more on DVD. The characters are good and the major roles are played with such expertise that the viewer links to them immediately and follows all the up and downs of the investigations. The stories themselves are well 'filled out' with few chase type scenes or macho gun waving. It's just good old cop slog, like it is in real life.Well done to all involved in the series, but especially to Vera herself - thanks for such a great character.Highly recommended

Gripping viewing!
Received this today (11th May 2017 a m). Was not disappointed. Picture quality sharp and clear. Subtitles very helpful. My personal favourite of this series is the first episode about the girl who was found dead on one of the remote Farne Islands. The chemistry between Vera and Aiden works well, along with cynical Kenny!I have watched all seven series, and got the DVDs as a result. One bonus is that there are no irritating breaks on the DVDs!Looking forward to Series 8 next year!

What can I add to the reviews this brilliant series starring Brenda Blethyn and based on the writings of Ann Cleeves has received to date.Set in Newcastle and Northumberland it is so refreshing to watch a crime series of this caliber with the principal actor being a woman andnot set in the South.. Those of you who like a good / great crime series should put their copies of Morse to one side and pick up a copy of Series 1, then 2, 3. 4. 5, 6 , and now 7.

Vera the Valiant.
The latest series of the marvellous TV series Vera comprises the following four episodes:1. Natural Selection: Vera investigates the suspicious death of Gemma Wyatt whose family and friends believe the death was accidental. When marks are discovered on the body that prove otherwise suspicion falls on those closest to Gemma and Vera begins to form a different pictire of the popular ranger.2. Dark Angel: When the body of a young man , bludgeoned to death, is discovered face down in a river and without any ID Vera and her team attempt to trace thev victim's identity by means of a ring found around the young man's neck and a drug's wrapper with a distinctive stamp "Dark Angel" The search leads Vera into Newcastle's criminal underworld.3. Broken Promise: Jamie Marshall, a young journalism student plunges to his death from the top of a disused building in the University of Northumberland. There are no eyewitnesses and Vera sets about trying to establish who might have wanted to kill Jamie and discovers that all is not what it seems.4.: The Blanket Mire: The body of a young woman, buried beneath the soil, is discovered on the moors. It is assuled the body is of local teenager, Mia Hinkin, who went missing six weeks earlier. The body is found very close to Mia's home and vera re-traces the vulnurable young woman's footsteps in order to track down the killer.I love everything about Vera from the setting of the wonderful rugged Northumberland Moors to the brilliant Brenda Blethyn. Both are a joy to watch and Blethyn manages to be extremely competent and effective despite her rather shambolic appearance and gait - and I do love the trade mark hat!Yet, unlike Morse, Lewis and other fictional detectives, Vera seems to exist in a world apart free from any interferenc from her superior officers; even the Press seem to leave her alone to get on with the job - no matter how gruesome her cases might be.It would also be nice if the main characters, not just Vera, were fleshed out a bit more as I would certainly like to know more about DC Kenny Lockhart and DS Aiden Healey to name but two! Vera is more Poirot than Morse and his ilk, being able to employ her "little grey cells" with little interference from the top brass or the fifth estate.I enjoy the series immensely and would thoroughly recommend Vera to all.

Exciting stories
I have always enjoyed the Vera stories and I also enjoy the other Ann Cleeve crime stories, Shetland. A great story to watch.

A Detective Show with class.
Best British detective show I have watched. It is the ordinary people portrayed throughout the show that impress me and those same ordinary people commit murder. It keeps you guessing as Vera and her team sift through the evidence as to who the guilty party is.

Well Written Taut Mysteries!
DCI Vera Stanhope has a way of calling everyone she interviews "love". It's sort of like Flo calling every one "honey". I half expect Vera to snap, "So did you smash in her head, love, for the fun of it?"But she doesn't go that far. This is not a sweet little old lady, though. She is tenacious and intuitive and grumpy. And loyal and hard-working, too. I'm so glad we get another four episodes of her detecting.....episode 1... "Natural Selection" Known by the locals as the Galapagos of the North, the Ternstone Island bird sanctuary has a resident ranger staff. A few ex-fishermen make a living taking out boats of seal and bird-watchers for tours. One overcast morning, the captain of one of these boats is horrified to see his fiancee, one of the rangers, lying dead on the rocks. That's just the start of this episode's heartbreak.Trivia: One of the 28 Farne Islands, off the Northumberland coast, filled in for Ternstone. In a 2017 interview, Brenda Blethyn = Vera, said, "It was beautiful on the Farne Islands, even though we were bombed by the birds who pooped on us."....episode 2... "Dark Angel" It's the dead of night and a young man in a tshirt runs through the woods. He doesn't really look scared, which is why it is a surprise when we see him flip over the railings of a bridge into the river below. Not to surface again – alive. This episode has a GREAT last-minute twist. "The burden of guilt lays heavily."....episode 3... "Broken Promise" James Marshall is a senior studying journalism at the University of Northumberland. As befits his major, he is a vlogger, but he doesn't leave a clue as to why he went to the top story of the condemned former science building and flung himself out of one of the plastic-covered windows. Or did he."They're all gone now.... Better to pass out than fall asleep. Better to come round than wake up."....episode 4... "The Blanket Mire" It's raining cats & dogs as members of the Northumberland Geological Survey finish up at the abandoned Brindale Mine. One of them slips trying to get up the road's grassy verge. When he regains his feet, he is horrified to see he uncovered an arm. Attached to a dead body. The 4 episodes of Set 7 total about 370 minutes. That's almost movie-length each, allowing for many red herrings to get in the way of my deductive powers (in my own head). If you purchase Set 7 on disc, English SDH subtitles are available. There are no bonus extras on the discs. If you're an avid mystery watcher like me, I have some good and some bad news for you. The good news is that they started filming Set 8 in June 2017. The bad news is that on 4/9/17, Rose Hill interviewed Brenda Blethyn. Hill writes, "The 71 year-old has recently revealed that she did have second thoughts about returning to the crime drama [for Series 7]. ... She said, 'When we finished [filming] this latest series in October I was worn out. I began thinking I couldn't do anymore of these. It was too exhausting.'"But we'll get at least one more set of this extraordinarily well-written series. Also, in the same interview, Hill asked Brenda if she was ever going to get rid of the floppy hat. Brenda was coy in her reply. I don't think it's her choice!Another great series of "Vera".Happy Reader

Tracking needs to be accurate
Finally received my DVD. It was VERY late in coming and actually the package had tape around it which made me think it had been opened. The DVD itself was in excellent condition and I have enjoyed watching it. I have already received one of my other 2 orders (Vera series 8) and hope to get series 9 in the next few days.
