Q: Can I put a small paper bag in this machine?

sure,Fruit/Vegetables/Fish Bones/Tissue Paper are all things that can be processed.

Q: Do you just buy carbon/charcoal pellets when it starts to smell or is there an indicator when I change them out? Or is there a filter to purchase?

Says after 1,000 hours a code comes up. Has carbon filter box to replace. Can still use after code appears. U order carbon.

Q: Do I need to use compost starter, like Bokashi for example?

No. I just add my food scraps and run the composter. It turns to a mulch-like product in 4.5 hours for medium quantity on standard compost. If you want organic compost it runs longer. It runs a long time but we have solar panels so I don’t feel bad about the energy it takes to run. I also run it in the garage as it makes a fair amount of noise and doesn’t smell the best.
