Junior Voiceworks 1: 33 Songs for Children

Fairly good
There are a few good songs in here, and some which are just okay. However, many are just cringeworthy and outdated, and a few seem to be borderline racist. The book acknowledges that songs need to be accessible and enjoyable for children, so I was surprised at the large number which I consider unusable in inner-city schools. They might work better in a quiet village school.

nice variety from calypso to traditional
Some lovely songs, nice variety from calypso to traditional. Each song has teaching tips, piano parts not difficult comes with cd. The best singing book I've bought in a long time, will get the others!

brilliant for choir and ks2
I am a choir and class teacher. I don't have much music knowledge but I enjoy singing. The songs are catchy and have some nice tunes. Upbeat mix and children will like these. There is the song and then backing track for most on the cd. For those who want more detailed lesson plans you can follow the book which has some good ideas on how to teach and the origin of the songs. Or you can use it as I do and dip into this for choir. Would recommend to anyone who teaches singing to children.

Great stuff!
This book is really great! I've recently started conducting a children's choir, so this was ideal for me as it gives lots of tips on how to rehearse each piece, and creative ideas on how to develop them. The CD is fantastic because it gives you an idea of the potential of each piece once it is up to a good standard. The arrangements and accompaniments are quite good - for example there is a Canadian folk song but it's been arranged with a really funky, up-beat accompaniment which makes it more fun but is still tasteful. There's a good range of songs in here and there are a couple of little gems that I have really enjoyed teaching and the children have enjoyed singing. Some of the songs are a bit tricky, but I guess it depends on the children's ability and the time available. However, there is something for everyone here. Highly recommended!

Voiceworks
The Voiceworks books are an indespensable tool for anyone who runs a choir! With full demonstrations on CD with a real choir and not some Sibelius sound-a-like. The provide a wealth of different styles for any choir and also have good warm up tips at the front of the book. With a lesson plan for each song, the score and CD, where can you go wrong?! I've found in particular 'Scoo-bi-doo' and 'train rhythms' very fun and rewarding to do with children from year 3-6. Well worth investing in!
