Ocean Waves [DVD]

By the makers of "Only yesterday"
Sometimes, marketing tries to sell you something you don't want, or something you won't like.To add a sticker to this DVD with "by the makers of Spirited Away" it's wrong. First, should be made clear that it's a subtitled film (I always watch the films in their original language, but a LOT of people don't, and they won't have the choice). And second, even though it's a studio Ghibli film, that doesn't mean that it's going to be "Spirited Away".I think it's unfair to class this film as a romantic film, at least in the western sense of it (subtle and with lots of unsaid words, watch out for face expressions). I would say it's more a drama, a Japanese drama for adults. In actual fact, once you watch this film you'll forget it was an animation film, because it's quite in the style of a Japanese non-animation drama. Also, it's way more realistic than any other anime films that happen in a school. For someone interested in Japanese culture you'll be pleased to noticed all the nuances of Japanese everyday life: the sound of the local trains, the izakaya, the street signs, the customs... very detailed indeed. The story is simple but interesting and believable. I won't spoil it for you, but if you liked My Neighbours The Yamadas [DVD ] and/or Only Yesterday [DVD ] you should definitely give this one a try.If you think you might like this drama, don't miss this hidden gem at a very interesting price.

How can I put this classic studio ghibli a love story in the true sense of the word. There is no english diolouge but if you do not mind the subtitles then this is a good film to add to your anime collection. It's not very long as with some of studio ghibi's films about 76 minutes, but this was only intended for the japanese market. the same as the other ghibli title Only Yesterday but just as enjoyable. So if you are a fan of studio ghibli films then you will like this one.

Ocean Waves
`Ocean Waves' is one of the more obscure films in the Ghibli catalogue and whilst it has less of a fantasy feel to it than their other films, it still has a certain charm. This follows two boys and a girl at school who strike up an unusual friendship. She is very impudent and rude and they can't seem to stop helping her when she is gets into awkward situations. There are also the inevitable tensions when any relationship triangle occurs. This has the attention to detail that I have come to expect from Ghibli films and the animation is as precise and beautiful as ever, indeed it reminds me of a great deal of `The Cat Returns' in animation style. There is the occasional use of small screens within a larger white screen, usually linking various scenes, that I haven't seen in Ghibli films before and whilst it didn't seem to add a great deal to the film, it didn't detract from it either. There is no English dubbing for this film and the subtitles and Japanese language lend this a certain authentic feel I enjoy when watching anime films. The extras are very sparse on the DVD, in fact all you get is a trailer for the film. All in all this is an OK film, it isn't very strong on story and after recent outstanding Ghibli films I found this a little disappointing, but in its own right it is perfectly enjoyable and a nice way to spend 70 minutes of your time. This is easy going, inoffensive and worth adding to your Ghibli/anime collection at some point.Feel free to check out my blog which can be found on my profile page.

Good art house movie
The only TV special from Studio Ghibli can be lined up with their other films "Whisper of the Heart" and "Only Yesterday". It is a coming-of-age story of two high school students who at first had a kind of love-hate relationship. The pacing of the film is a little slow, but with this kind of story quite right. One of the best animated stories I have seen.

One Tokyo girl transferred to a school in a Kochi.
Kochi is near Ocean, far from Tokyo.Near Hiroshima. The girl's name is Mariko. She had to move there because of her family problems. Not so many I cannot write, but I quite like this story.Mariko is cute, attractive and sad, but Happy and vivid girl. This is one of the most favorite Jiburi Anime for me.

5 star classic.
This film is an under-rated classic in the Studio Ghibli canon. There are the well-known classics and I think this is worthy of them. Whilst my daughter and I love films such as 'My Neighbour Totoro' and 'Spirited Away', this is a Ghibli film for grown-ups who still love Ghibli. 'Only Yesterday' is great but this film is fantastic.

The poorest Ghibli film in the set.
Having collected all the Ghibli films on BluRay I can say this was the most disappointing.I will just clarify though, that as this is a Ghibli film, its still very worth getting. But, there is no English language dub. Why not? Surely they could have created one? Actors would be queuing up to get involved with a Ghibli film! And not one extra. Why not? Even the usual Ghibli Trailers would have been something, but this has nothing. For one of the shortest films (its all over in 72mins) this was rather a disappointment when compared to every other set in this collection.

Not your typical Ghibli film, represents a refreshing departure...
I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. I've seen everything they've released, even every episode of Future Boy Conan. After seeing the major releases, I was clamoring for more, so I went about tracking down each and every Studio Ghibli show they've ever released. Ocean Waves and Only Yesterday were difficult to find, but worth the effort.Ocean Waves is an adolescent story about growing up in a small town, and the allure of the big city. It's surprisingly complex for an anime feature, and is a rewarding film to watch. I've watched it several times, and it demonstrates perfectly how Miyazaki can pull you into a film. In the same way Totoro was seen through the eyes of a child, Ocean Waves shows us life through the eyes of several adolescent high schoolers. Even though the stories are very different, the grip with which Miyazaki holds the viewers attention is impressive. If you enjoy Studio Ghibli's earlier efforts, I see no reason why these more obscure films would disappoint. I'd also suggest stopping by Studio Ghibli's website to see which titles you haven't yet seen. Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, and even the zany Yamada's (all of which include English dubs) are all worthwhile.
