Greenworks 40V 13 in Cordless String Trimmer, 2.0 Ah Battery and Charger

I don't often write reviews, but figured this might help someone on the fence about this tool: I've owned the tool about a week, so still can't speak to longevity of the product, but so far, I LOVE it. I'm guessing that those that hate it might be used to using heavier duty, gas powered, professional units. #1 I was in the market for a new trimmer/edger, and since I already have the chainsaw and leaf blower, and a couple big batteries for the greenworks, thought I'd give this a try. #2 I'm a 54 year old woman, 5'3" tall and about 128 pounds, who has been using a ryobi string trimmer for the past 3 years. This greenworks unit is incredible by comparison. I'm able to shorten the unit to string trim or edge comfortably, without undue strain on my arms and shoulders (the ryobi was too long, and I had to darn near contort myself to keep it up off the ground when I used it, the balance being off for someone of my stature). #3 I used the unit to trim and edge my professional cut flower field, consisting of (8) 40- foot, in-ground beds, plus (4) 50-foot exterior timber frame beds. It took one 4ah battery, plus a little of the 2ah battery that came with the unit. Now that I'm comfortable using it, I anticipate co.pleting the entire field with just the one battery. #4 I followed the directions for auto releasing the string, and experienced *no issues* at all. Each time you use the auto release function, as others have stated, it only releases about 1/4" of line, and it released flawlessly each and every time. Read and follow directions. #5 By the end of last year's flower season I was half dead from trying to prevent the grass paths from growing into the beds. I shed tears of gratitude last week using this to edge and lightly trench the beds, thinking of the many, many hours of hands and knees work I might now be liberated from doing. #6 Unit did a fair job of cutting tough pasture grasses so that I could move my chicken coops and electric net to fresh ground. For the price point and utility, I believe it to be a great purchase.

A definite piece of crap. I would give it zero stars if I could. I’ve used it twice and it is so frustrating trying to advance the string. The automatic string feed system is poorly designed. It basically will only let out 1/4” of string each time the power switch is released and then pressed on. I would find myself turning the machine off and on many times to get enough string out to be able to trim. Then, the string would break off a bit and I would find that I would have to work the switch off and on again many times to be able to trim again. If they would just make it a bump feed, it would solve this problem. If you want a 40v trimmer with a bump feed, you will need to upgrade to the 15” trimmer. The 15” trimmer does not have a wheel for doing edging, and it is heavier than the 13” 40v, and it is not adjustable in length. BTW, the string that comes with this trimmer is junk. I don’t know why the company can’t at least give you quality string with this trimmer. I will be trashing this trimmer and upgrading to the 15” trimmer. I may make a hybrid trimmer by combining the best of the two trimmers to make a trimmer that I like.

Love this trimmer. I didn't think a battery one would ever be this good. This thing is a champ for mowing down weeds and trimming the yard and edging sidewalks. Its something you will love doing yard work and looking for more stuff to mow down. Well worth the money. Battery last long time and quality seems great so far after a couple weeks and easy to use that you could even let your teenagers use.

After researching all the other weed eaters out there, I settled on this 40v Greenworks weed eater because husband has the Greenworks Chainsaw and just loves it. I was also excited to get another 40v battery that will work on the chainsaw. The assembly of this item is pretty simple. It does require a Phillips head screwdriver. After assembly, it felt a bit heavy but oddly enough after putting the battery on it, it balanced out quite well. Of note, this 40v battery is lighter than our other ones. Pleased with my purchase, I headed out to weed eat the garden. After about a minute, the string broke and continued to break about every minute over and over again. The string also wouldn’t feed, but I have since learned that it will feed about 1/4” every time it starts. I was truly disappointed. My beautiful Greenworks worked no better than my old worn out Black and Decker. I came back to Amazon and began reading the reviews and learned that lots of people had the same issue. I took their advice and got a different brand of string, not the twisted string, and I rewound my spool. To my delight, I just finished weed eating for over an hour without a single break of the string. The battery never slowed down and would probably out last me. Greenworks, you make a wonderful product. Don’t ruin it with cheap string!

It is not compatible with my Greenworks blowers (60v), because everything seems to be changing to 40v (or heaven forbid) 22 v stuff. But this is powerful and the battery charges fast and lasts long enough.

Tool works great! However, the line/twine is the worst I have ever used. Very brittle! I cannot go over about a foot or two without having to refeed line due to breakage! Hoping to find replace line that is far more durable/flexible

I will start by saying that I am long-time and mostly happy Greenworks customer. I have had 2 mowers, a blower, polesaw, and a hedge trimmer and they've all worked well. My experience with this trimmer could not be farther from satisfied. This thing is absolute junk and they should stop selling it. Several things: the edging wheel is utterly useless, threw that away immediately. The provided trimmer line breaks at a rate I didn't think was possible. Watch out, if you hit anything other than 7 blades of grass your line will be down to 3" in a heartbeat. Which is a problem because the auto-feed just doesn't work...at all. After a few minutes of futzing and manually feeding the line I gave up. Took the battery out and heaved the thing into the trash pile. It'll go on FB marketplace for $10. This has greatly soured me on the entire brand, not sure I'll continue on.

Ugh. I read so many string trimmer reviews and specs and felt solid about this purchase but on first and prolonged (full battery) use, it wouldn't release the string. I kept doing the full stop + press trigger + squeeze handle as per instructions... over and over but I would only get the smallest amount of additional string. like 3 inches total length at max. Also who wants to fully stop cutting grass and let it fully stop spinning and restart it each time to be able to continue cutting. Maybe i am missing something but it was a total chore to operate. Returned after one use and i'm back to reading about other brands and models.
