True love has never been more confusing or more hilarious! Fabulous funnyman Steve Guttenberg (Police Academy, Three Men and a Baby) teams with Jami Gertz (Sibling Rivalry) and Golden GlobeÂ(r) winners Shelley Long ("Cheers") and Kyle MacLachlan ("Twin Peaks") in a laugh-riot comedy of passion, romance and mistaken identity! Painfully boring Gus Kubicek (Guttenberg) isn't exactly ladies' man materialat least not until his meddling romance writer sister (Long) gets hold of him. Soon he's the buff and bronzed main character in the romantic fantasies of his dream girl, Emily. Trouble is, Gus can't tell if Emily really loves him or just his sexy, leather-clad alter ego!

“Don’t tell her it’s me” quintessential (bad REALLY bad) 80’s RomCom
Okay so it’s not an “80’s” movie per se, since it came out in 1990. “The boyfriend school” is what it is titled now, but I knew it as “Don’t tell her it’s me”. This was back when I was in high school and all RomComs then were BAD! So we’ll call this the best of the bad. We first come into this movie as Steve Guttenberg’s character, Gus, is recovering from radiation treatments for his cancer. His sister Lizzie, played by Shelley Long, who happens to be a romance novelist, is bound and determined to find him love. But Gus being as sick as he was, is less than desirable when it comes to looks. His sister Lizzie sets him up on a blind date with a beautiful yet shallow brunette Emily, played by Jami Gertz. When the blind date goes terribly wrong, Lizzie decides to get Gus back into shape and turns him into Lobo, the hunky New Zealander. (Yes Steve Gutenberg is a hunky foreign guy) and of course Emily falls for it and Lobo. It is quirky, horribly directed, 80’s RomCom. YOU MUST SEE IT!

Don't Tell her it's Me
The film was originally titled, "Don't Tell Her it's Me", which is why the theme song repeats it. At some point, they changed the name to, "The Boyfriend School" because that is the title of the book based on the film. It sounds really cheesy, I honestly prefer the original title. It's an enjoyable film with lots of humor and nostalgia. I use to really enjoy this as a kid. Jamie Gertz's character is super shallow and it takes a makeover by Shelley Long to make her attracted to a nice guy, Steve Guttenberg. That's the basic premise. I was happy to find it on Amazon finally, I've been looking for it for quite some time.

This is an irreverent comedy suited for Shelley Long
I had never heard of this movie before it popped up in the "movies we think you'll like" category. It didn't have a preview, so, I took a chance. My husband got up and left half-way through it. I highly recommend watching it with chocolate, popcorn, and a good sense of humor. Mostly, if you still watch the movie Twister and enjoy reruns of Cheers, and if you remember life before everything was "kid proofed", you will find this movie fun and entertaining. If you are into Taylor Swift or Beyonce, don't bother. Also, don't watch this with kids, ever. Definitely not recommended for family movie night.

VHS tape of this entitled "Don't Tell Her It's Me"
I love this cute movie for its romance and also its upbeat nature. As I mentioned in my title, this movie was called by another name originally and I had the VHS tape of it. I now have it in DVD form. I truly enjoy watching this movie time and again.

Cute but WAY overpriced!
Yes, yes, I know it is confusing with the title changes that have occurred here. Originally titled "The Boyfriend School" after the novel, the title was changed to "Don't Tell Her It's Me" when it was released in theaters but then changed back to its original title when released on dvd. However, the VHS tapes still use the "Don't Tell..." title. I have no clue why the titles were switched around so much. A similar thing happened to another movie that was ironically also filmed in Charleston and that was the 1988 Justine Bateman movie "Satisfaction" which is sometimes for some reason referred to as "Sweet Little Rock & Roller." Anyway, this is a cute movie whatever the title. I only bought it b/c I collect movies that are filmed here in Charleston since I live here. I like to see how the city and surrounding areas have changed since the times the movies were filmed here. I think the reason this movie is so expensive is b/c it is a lesser-known film so it hasn't exactly been mass-produced and since that means there are fewer copies out there, they have to charge more to make it worth it (make a profit from releasing it on dvd.) It is certainly not worth the $40+ I forked out for it but as I said, I collect movies filmed in my city so wanted to have it for my collection. I had bought the VHS tape that was sold on Amazon but it was not in the best condition since tape gets old and strained to the point that it doesn't play well. If you are only interested in seeing a cute flick (probably considered a chick flick) then see if you can rent it.

So Bad It's Good
I frequently watch movies based on their titles or strange covers and this had both going for it. The first 30 minutes are rough but it quickly won me over as charming, bizarre, and cliched in all the best ways and is on my list of top So Bad It's Good recommendations. I've been telling everyone about it ever since I saw it and will definitely be giving it another watch or 5 over the coming years.

The Boyfriend School (Don't Tell Her It's Me)
This is one of the most 'fun' movies in years. I was so excited to find it in dvd format, since my vcr had passed on ages ago. It's one of those feel good movies that one can watch over and over again, just for the humour in it. Five stars is my vote. I put it in the same category as Micki & Maude.

Cute movie
An overall feel good movie. Quirky characters and fun to watch. Almost true to life thinking how women are attracted to unattainable "loners"

How can you not like this movie?
It's so bad, it's good. I love Shelley Long and her daughter character, Piglet in this film. Really comical and dead cheesy. A must see if you like B-movies from the 80s and 90s :)
