Does it works connecting it directly to the tascam dr 40?

Yep. Make sure the phantom power in on on your recorder. 48v.

Trying to order the mx185-omnidirectional. However, it keeps popping up as a mx183-omnidirectional. Why?

The mx183 is the omnidirectional polar pattern cartridge model. The mx185 is the cardioid polar pattern cartridge model. Shure sells replacement cartridges with different polar patterns (omni, cardioid, super-cardioid) that can be used interchangeably on these microphones. If you want the omnidirectional version, you want the mx183.

How long is the supplied cable?

The mic. cable is just over four feet long. Very similar to other mics. like this. By the way, it is a good working mic.
