It can take less than a minute to do each day (if you're writing it on their behalf) so it's very doable (or you can make it a bigger conversation if you like) but the idea is each day there is a question at the top that you ask your child and you leave it up to them to interpret how they answer it. You write down the answer they give or older children could do it independently. On each page there is space for 3 entries so you keep going for 3 years and you can then see how their answer to each question evolves over the years, which is lovely. I found the main benefit though is that, when everything is rushed if you're struggling to get quality time with your child this creates a little space in the day where they have your full attention, you're not teaching them, training them, directing them, you're just interested to hear their thoughts on something, and there is no right or wrong answer. You could also use the diary for just one year and use the space to record multiple children's answers if you have more than one.
