for anyone interested in this case this is a good read. I will tell you why. Because Michael Griesbach was not involved in the rape case, he gives all the details of what went on in Manitowoc County and how that case came to be. How Steve Avery put himself in the cross hairs of the local police. The reader will clearly see why the first case was no mistake. and how there were numerous attempts to show Steve did not do the crime. This is very important to understand the second case which in many ways parallels the first case. If you understand the first case it is hard to not go into the second questioning the culture of this area.In the second case which MG is more involved in, you can clearly see how he loses his subjectivity. He very quickly sees Steven Avery as guilty and never questions the evidence where in the first case he goes to great lengths to question it. In the murder case he never explains any of the many questions that surround the evidence that was found and who found it , and instead refers to the official story.But the what makes this book a good read is that you have an Attorney who works in the prosecutors office of that area pointing the finger at the Police chief and prosecutor and accusing them of setting up Steve Avery and that is a rare find.You get the impression that Steve Avery was marked early as bad news and someone who should be taken off the streets.

First let me say that along with probably almost everyone that watched Marking a Murderer I thought for sure he had been railroaded again. I am the wife of a police officer and this documentary left a very real, very bad taste in my mouth. In saying that I am not one that believes everything I see on TV. So the show started my hunt for everything I could find on the murder case. I have since read over ten thousand pages of pretrial, trial and post trial court transcripts, police reports, evidence photos, and everything else I could get my hands on. Then I found your book. Well written, well researched and I would recommend it to anyone!

good book to read when your bored

This is really two books in one. It begins with the case that put Steven A very in jail for 18 years as an innocent man. I didn't watch the documentary, so this information was all new to me.I am not sure that those years in prison MADE him a murderer. With his background , he would have traveled that road in my opinion at sometime later.Then the book covers his accusation and conviction of the murder of the young photographer . I firmly believe he committed this crime and should never be free .

Great true crime book about Avery with twists, interesting evidence and a possible dirty justice system. Those who watched Netflix series will be interested to see the story from the author's impartial view.

The Avery story is made internationally famous by the Netflix production Making a Murderer, and there is a cult-like following dedicated to Steve Avery. Lord help you if you raise even the most reasonable question on their many social media pages. Thus it was sad, but refreshing to read this attorney's front row accounting of the history of both crimes associated with Avery's incarcerations. It is a fact-filled sensitive accounting by someone who has no personal stake, and is not sensationizing of the horrible crimes. I liked this book. I commend this author.

This book is a tad repetitive and focuses the bulk of the story on the trials of Steve Avery rather than the crimes. There is no doubt that Mr. Avery is a dangerous deviant and that the Innocence Project was instrumental in facilitating his early release back into a vulnerable clueless society. I did not find that the authors mundane forays into his personal life added any probative value to the case, instead it made an already too long story longer. In my opinion, no one should care about Mr. Avery, rather, we should give a care to the women he so casually brutalized, and murdered.

This book was okay, though, from comparing some of Mr. Griesbach's descriptions with the investigative and court documents, he got a few things wrong. For those who think Avery is guilty, you will likely love this book. For those who think he is innocent, you will likely hate it. In all, there were some interesting revelations in the book with regard to Avery's first conviction that were extremely interesting... for example, the leather coat, etcetera. In all, I would say it is a decent read for those following the Avery saga.

Poorly written and researched. Released on the back of a documentary without any realistic journalistic skill. Cashes in on making a murder. No substance. Writer appears to change his view half way through!!! Very poor . Hugely disappointing and unprofessional.

A gripping but horrifying and tragic account of something that one would usually associate with a script from a modern Thriller movie. However, all sadly too real. It appears to me that Avery, who had shown signs of disturbed behaviour in his past, had allowed his being the recipient of a terrible miscarriage of justice, to twist his mind even further to the extent that he committed a crime most evil and monstrous after his release from prison.

The first two thirds or so of the book (the sections dealing with the first case) was fascinating and very in depth. The remainder of the book felt as if it was written by someone else. It just skimmed the second case, skipping over a variety of crucial topics, and the author had clearly already made up his mind on the case and didn't see the point in discussing it further. If I was to rate the last third alone, I'd probably only give two stars.

This is a great book which for me was addictive. A proper 'page turner', I was gripped from the start after watching making a murderer. I am stunned and shocked at the way one man has been treated so badly by the police. If you look at the facts I find it impossible to come to the same decision as the jury, however in an attempt to be balanced I can see why at the time the prosecution got the result they got. If there is a retrial I hope that there is a follow up book. A totally gripping and enthralling read.
