The Shire Cookbook

I have to be honest I was really disappointed with this product. There isn’t much info to go on here so before purchasing I went to the product’s website to see if I could find out more. The premise of the book sounded fantastic. A box of old recipes etc from “The Shire” found in the attic and collated to make a cookbook, as a huge LoTR/Tolkien fan (as is the person I was buying this as a gift for) I thought the idea was great. However, when the book arrived I was really disappointed with it. There’s no real attempt to make it aesthetically fit with the premise, it doesn’t look like a bunch of old papers and recipes bundled together to make a book (with a little effort this could have been so easy to achieve. The only real Tolkien/Rings link is the name of the book, the cover photo and the font used for the headings in the book (the main text of the recipes is in a regular, generic font).The book is very short, just 93 pages including all title pages, acknowledgements, section divider pages and an ‘about the author’ page and some pages are half taken up with vaguely (if at all) relevant images - for example on the opposite page of a recipe for ‘Sausage Eggs’ (aka Scotch Eggs) there is a picture of a sprig of some herb or leaf and figure diagrams of three mushrooms - just to be clear there are no mushrooms in the recipe it is next to.The recipes themselves look good, but as the book was meant as a gift I cannot say from experience what the outcome of them would be.Overall a very good premise that could have been something great has turned out to be a real let down and I will be buying another gift to replace this book.The only reason I am not returning it is that the person I bought the book for really likes mead and there are a couple of mead recipes in the back of the book so he will probably still get it but it won’t be as his Christmas present!

For a fan of the film the recipes are well researched

Bought for a friend who enjoys it. Good quality with a range. A must for any LOTR chef.

Great little book for film themed cookbooks, enjoyed cooking from it

Bought it for daughter's birthday, she absolutely loves it. We visited Hobbiton in New Zealand and this adds additional meaning and significance to the whole experience.
