Dig for Gold Science Kit – Dig Up Real Pyrite Nuggets (Fool’s Gold)

I bought two of these, one for my 3 year old and one for a 6 year old.Positives:It engrossed my kids for about an hour. What kid won't get excited at a box featuring a golden treasure chest opening. The gold bar is small in comparison to the size of the packaging it comes in. But my kids didn't seem to care. The bar is coated in gold color but is made of compacted dirt/sand that had 3 pieces of real "fools gold" inside each bar. The fools gold chunks they found were good sized and good quality. Kids were very excited.Negatives: The dirt takes muscle to get through, which is good because it requires work to get to -- but the younger kids (the 3 and 6 year olds) required lots of adult assistance to muscle through the compacted dirt/sand and break it to reach the "gold". I'd say age 10+ could do it themselves but below that will require assistance.Hint: If you're kids are struggling to get to the gold (or you're tired of helping)-- put the bar in a large bowl of lukewarm water and have them work on excavating the bar under the water. The water loosens the dirt/sand making it easier to get to the "gold" inside.I do wonder from previous reviews if quality control is/was an issue-- we had 3 good-sized chunks of fools gold in each bar-- but some others seems to have had a different experience. Maybe this has been resolved by the company.Overall wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

I had my 5 year old play with this on a old cutting board and the dust still managed to get on the table, also on my sons clothes, so be prepared that it is messy. The gold pieces would have been better if they were bigger and more golden. Looks nice under a microscope though haha. My son has a few of these digging kits and I let him wear a mask while he's digging cause I don't want him breathing the dust that it let's off. He was excited though when he saw the gold and put them in a Melissa and Doug treasure chest he has. I would say it probably took us about 1.5 hours, I had to help him eventually.

I buy this every year for my son for Christmas it has become more of a tradition now. It's the first toy that he wants to play with and it keeps him busy for a while he really enjoys digging out the stuff. I have bought these for birthday presents for other kids and it seems to be their favorite present that they get more than the expensive toys that other people get.

This was a great experiment kit! We dug for the gold and found the nuggets as instructed..After finding the first one ,my hand started to hurt and the little ones (4 and 6) didn't want to dig, they wanted me to do it. Maybe an older child would be more willing. Overall a cool kit!

i have bought several digging products from amazon. This is a present for my daughter (almost 14) for christmas 2019. she love these products and i will continue buying them until she grows out of them.

My son loves this. It was a nice size and came with three peices inside. My son loved it so it was a win for me! Very cute gift for gold loving children.

Eight year old had requested an excavation kit for Christmas, didn't mind whether it was gold, gems, dinosaurs or what to be dug up! He absolutely loved it. Tools included did the job well. I have given this 4 stars as the 'plaster of paris' seems much softer than it used to be, he managed the dig within an hour, so not quite the value it used to be.

These kits make an enormous mess, but the kids love them

I bought this for my son as a christmas present, it didn't take him long to dig out the nuggets, disappointing cos there were only 3 nuggets to dig out but he said he liked it.

My daughter saw this on a you tube video and asked for one of her own.This is an awesome gift for children with imaginative minds
