I'm buying a new sink which comes with a plumbing kit - do I need to purchase this kit separately in order to fit the insinkerator?

Sorry for vague answer, but it really depends on the plumbing kit that came with the sink... I retro-fitted this to an existing B&Q sink and I did not need the plumbing kit.

Dose the plumbing kit have the 40mm/50mm trap adaptor

This is the fitting kit for an insinkerator so has no voltage at all ;)

Do you need this plumbing kit if you have a 1.5 sink?

you will need the plumbing kit as the waste from the small sink is unlikely to be adapted for the disposer. Better to get the kit and use new fittings.
