This is the wonderful story of a little boy that is left alone in the house one winter night because his parents had to take his baby sister Addah to the doctor in the village.Because of the blizzard his parents and baby sister lost their way and have drown in the lake near the village.Because Nicholas (the little boy)did not have another relatives to raise him, the villagers took this responsability upon themselves but because they were very poor families they decided that each and every family in the village will take Nicholas for a year starting on Christmas Eve.To thank them for their kindness Nicholas carved wooden toys and left these on their doorstep every Christmas Eve.He never forget to go to the lake where his little sister drowned and put in the water a toy for her as a Christmas present.When the harvest was bad and the fish in the lake was not enough to feed the villagers and no one could afford to take him, a tinker man took him, taught him the secrets of wood carving and left him all his money, his house and workshop.This is a wonderful story to warm your hearts, a story that will teach us and our children the true spirit of Christmas.Highly recommended! I hunted down and found the original Finnish version with English subtitles. It is beautiful, understated, subtle and moving. It is magical without that awful, grinning, tinseltown schlock that the Americans call nostalgia (it seems most American filmakers swap emotion for sentimentality). It was foilmed in a real village at -40F at times, the people are authentic, the acting again understated. If you are not addicted to dazzling mush, and can enjoy utter beauty and a storyline that doesn't just tickle the superficial 'feel-good' mince that is pushed at this time, you will be quite enchanted by this film. I've seen a lot of Christmas Movies, but this one is by far one of the best. I had never even heard of it before I bought it recently. ..it is simply stunning, and has everything really that Disney type movies lack. That real warmth and simplicity of a Tale that could be every bit believable. I have watched it twice already before Christmas. I lent it out to someone yesterday, realising I probably won't see them now until mid January.. So had to order another copy. Simply because I want to watch it again over Christmas. Absolutely hooked!

A very much enjoyed watching this film and rate it a very good Christmas gift. The dubbing (very good in this instance) does not interfere with the storyline and enjoyment. I recommend this DVD to all lovers of the festive season!

Wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this, but the whole family loved it. It's so unlike the many over-dramatic and almost slapstick Xmas dvds (which we also love). Its unique feel, steady pace and heart-warming story of the creation of Santa Clause is just beautiful. The way the village decide how to raise a orphaned child in tough times is inspiring. You'll want to cuddle your children after watching this, then do something for those less fortunate.

The movie seems a bit sad at first but to me was like walking deep into a forest. I loved it. It takes you out of the idea of Christmas like the expensive shopping time of the year and goes back to the beggining of Santa Claus. When annonimously he would leave presents he made himself to those people he loved. I think is simply beautiful. I sincerely recommend it.

I purchased this as I had seen this film years ago when my daughters were small and I loved it, beautiful film about the origin of St Nicholas/Father Christmas, my only gripe was that the dvd clutched right at the end so missed a bit at the end, was bit gutted about that as I had sat engrossed all the through. Bit of a shame as no point sharing the film with my young nieces now which was the purpose of buying it

Im an avid christmas film collector and this is one of the best. A boy is left alone and adopted by the local poor community who take it in turns to care for him. He begins making gifts for the children he stays with. A wonderful film with sad parts - but happy magical finale. The film is dubbed, the beautiful snow covered country it is filmed in makes up for this. Buy it!

Inutilisable…

It's a story about a young boy who loses his parents in the ice and ends up being an apprentice to a local furniture maker who is a bit brash and rough. The boy starts making toys and ages in the old man's work shop. Won't ruin the story for you but is a joy to watch every year. This movie is in a foreign language and dubbed in English. It does a good job and you barely notice.

Diese DVD habe ich mir seinerzeit bestellt, da mir sowohl die Inhaltsbeschreibung als auch die durchwegs positiven Kundenrezensionen hierzu sehr gefallen haben. Da gestern das Wetter schlecht war, dachte ich, ich könnte einen gemütlichen Tag auf der Couch, zusammen mit Neveah und Jethro sowie einer Schachtel mit Pralinen in Begleitung verbringen und legte aus diesem Grunde diese DVD in den Player ein, um sie zusammen mit meinen Lieben anzusehen.Der Film hat uns allen wirklich sehr gut gefallen, nur kann ich die negative Rezension eines Comunityteilnehmers hierzu wirklich gut verstehen, denn auch ich fand die Geschichte teilweise etwas bedenklich, zumal wenn man hierzu auch noch die FSK-Freigabe ab sechs Jahren bedenkt, mit welcher diese Verfilmung ausgezeichnet worden ist.Im Wesentlichen geht es in diesem Film um den Waisenjungen Nikolas, welcher sowohl seine Eltern als auch seine kleine Schwester durch einen tragischen Unfall verliert und dann in weiterer Folge von einer Familie zur nächsten im Dorf "weitergereicht" wird, da die Dorfbewohner selbst sehr arm sind und keiner in der Lage ist, sich gänzlich um den kleinen Jungen zu kümmern und ihn zu umsorgen. Dennoch zeigte Nikolas sich dankbar und fertigte für die Kinder seiner Gastfamilien kleine Geschenke an, welche er ihnen zum Abschied gibt.Zum Schluss landet er bei dem verbitterten Tischler Iisaaki, welcher sein handwerkliches Geschick entdeckt und findet, nachdem er dessen Herz gewonnen hatte, bei ihm ein neues Zuhause. Anfänglich dachte ich ja noch, dass Iisaaki ein abgrundtief boshafter Mensch wäre, wollte er den Jungen doch zunächst auf dem Grund des Sees wissen. In Wirklichkeit vermisste er jedoch seine eigenen Kinder, nämlich seine beiden Söhne, welche zur See gefahren sind und in Wahrheit wohl auch Menschen und Gesellschaft. Die Wandlung des Tischlers vom weihnachtshassenden Grinch zum Freund der Kinder hat mir sehr gut gefallen und das macht für mich den Film eigentlich auch wertvoll für Kinder.Allerdings sollten sich vor allem jüngere Kinder den Film nur zusammen mit ihren Eltern ansehen, da sich durchaus Fragen ergeben könnten, denn insbesondere die Szene mit dem See fand ich schon etwas bedenklich, auch wenn es mir durchaus bewusst ist, das dies wahrscheinlich zur Trauerbewältigung gehört, denn jedes Jahr zu Weihnachten ist Nikolas zum See gegangen, hat ein Loch ins Eis gehackt und seiner toten Schwester mit einem Spielzeug bedacht, welches er in das Wasser geworfen hat. Ich stellte mir dann vor, dass die kleine Aada zu einer Nixe oder Seegeist geworden ist - und warum sollte man unsichtbare Geistwesen nicht mit einem Geschenk bedenken?Hinzu kommt noch, dass der Brauch, sich an Weihnachten zu beschenken, sicher eine solchen Ursprung gehabt haben könnte. Auch die Legende vom Weihnachtsmann wird in dem Film sehr schön umschrieben - haben doch Legenden vielfach den Ursprung in einer wahren Begebenheit.Fazit: Es ist ein wirklich schöner, tiefsinniger Weihnachtsfilm, aber nur bedingt geeignet für Kinder ab sechs Jahren. Kinder sollten sich daher den Film nur zusammen mit den Eltern ansehen, die die Fragen, welche sich durchaus ergeben könnten, geduldig beantworten sollten. Wer wie ich zudem sehr nah am Wasser gebaut hat, sollte auch eine Taschentücherbox in Reichweite aufstellen, denn zumindest ich habe teilweise geheult wie ein Schlosshund, da der Film teilweise auch sehr traurige Sequenzen enthält wie zB etwa jenen Moment am See, wo Nikolas seine kleine Schwester mit einem Geschenk bedenkt.

I have loved this movie at first sight and recommend it to anyone who believes in Santa. The story is so pure of love for family and friends. I have this one and sent it to my son. Sharing the wonderment of Santa and his beginnings and continuation is explained or shown here. You have to deal with the circle of life and the selflessness of one to bring joy to the young . Faith to those who need to believe in this mystery of how can HE? Just a lovely piece of real snow in this location.. Most use cotton stuff stratigicly placed. Yuck. Nice to see and lovely to share.
