Q: what is the weight of the shipped machine?

Sawstop has an 800 number and they can tell you exactly but I will guess it is around 300 lbs. It is delivered by a truck with a lift gate and sitting on a pallet. I think it was in four or five separate packages. I was pretty concerned about the weight as I am an old guy and no close young neighbors. The heaviest piece is about 135 lbs. I was able to put the stand together and place it near the pallet and with the help of my 65 yr. old wife with gimpy knees, I was able to set the heaviest piece onto the stand. The rest of the assembly was pretty straight forward thanks to best instructions I have ever seen. Hope that is helpful.

Q: Is the 1.75 hp sufficient to cut thru thick (2in or greater) hardwoods? Most of my research says to have at least 2hp or more.

It depends on the blade and 110v or 220v. I had problems with 2.25 inch beech using the stock SawStop blade. I didn't have time to rewire to 220v ( you need to order a rewiring kit also ). I bought a good rip blade and that made a huge difference. Basically I think this saw is under-powered if you try to rip thick hardwood with a standard ( alternate top bevel tooth) blade. You can't feed without burning the wood, But it also depends on the fence; mine tends to pinch which makes the problem worse. But a good rip blade made a huge difference.

Q: Where is this saw manufactured?

I was told by the Sawstop sales rep. at the National Woodworkers show that it is made in the same factory in Taiwan as the Jet and the Powermatic saws. But in my opinion this is is built better that either of those two. Absolutely beautiful finish and quality. And they have gone out of their way to create the most ridiculously simple assembly instructions you will ever see. And the bolts and screws are encased in a way that makes it so easy a cave man (like me) could put it to gatherer.
