Ancient Turkey: A Captivating Guide to Göbekli Tepe and the Ancient Civilizations of Anatolia and Eastern Thrace (Forgotten Civilizations)

This book focuses on Ancient Civilizations that resided in what is today modern Turkey. Specifically, It analyses the socio-political development and economic and military achievements. The Greek civilization played a vital role in this part of the world. It is a well-written book.

This was a subject I don’t usually read but thought the history of a country we talk little about would be worth the time.

Beautiful, that is what this latest release is (among much else). Everything readers would expect from a Captivating History book is present within these pages, so no one will be without an excellent, immersive experience.

Worked very well in digital format. A very fascinating and interesting read about the rise and fall of the many various civilizations in ancient Turkey. A very interesting read. I highly recommend.

In the beginning the author describes Gobekli Tepe and the various carvings 'into' the stone. This is totally incorrect in most cases. The images ARE NOT carved into the stones and pillars. The images are in relief, which means that all the stone around them was carved away, leaving the image standing out from the surface. It makes the remainder of the book suspect. As I continued reading I found more obvious mistakes in the chronology and the geography. Too bad.

Lots of research to produce this tome. However: the first and last chapters are really superfluous as they just confirm what is in the main text. There's lots of conjecture early on (through lack of evidence) and it tends to get overly wordy here and there. There is mention of a very early civilisation accumulating a lot of 'money' - surely well before money was common? Confess to skimming past all the references to parables and legends (fairy tales) - but 'Captivating' seems to love regurgitating fanciful fables. Includes references to many ages in the area.

I am traveling in next few days . I knew a lot of these myths but it always great to reread them.

This book on Ancient turkey has been well researched and the narrative is easily understood. There have been many kingdoms and empires in Anatolia which have left their mark on the western culture. Many of these have been unknown until recently. As a former history teacher I learned much that was not available at the time I was teaching history. I highly recommend this book to any who are interested in the history of this area. Though not all of the kingdoms and empires were of the Greek culture, many had common characteristics of the Greek culture. In this book you will learn of the first recorded treaty between two Nations, the first naval battle, and of the first coining of metal coins. Some of the nations highlighted in this book are the Hatti, the Hittites, the Mitanni, the Phrygian empire, the Lydian empire and the Urartu. It tells of the beginning, rise to power and decline of each of these civilizations. The book also tells of the mythology and religion of Anatolia. You will also learn of some of the greatest kings and emperors of these kingdoms and empires. The book is well worth the time that you spend reading it.

This book is an interesting summary of the subject but could do with a thorough edit to make it easier to read.

I am on my last day of a three week tour of Turkey and have read this book in conjunction with my tour. I found the country and book fascinating along with visits to a number of museums which brought the culture and book to life.

Captivating History continues to provide the reader with an excellent history of this region…..I enjoy this series and will continue my reads….

Rubbish

It isn't a publication that leaves you with any confidence you're getting a reliable account . Presentation is dreary and cliched. Photo's are poor quality black and white and add nothing really. A dismal reading experience all round.
