Q: Is this meant to be in an upright position only? Or does the sound quality worsen if laid on its back?

As Brian said, you will not want to lay this speaker on it's back. However if we're talking about horizonal and vertical, they sound identical in that regard, but keep in mind the front, back, and sides do not have feet and will have a potential of damaging anything softer than aluminum.

Q: Can the bluetooth or wireless be turned off?

No. The speaker is strictly a Bluetooth speaker, and as such, has no wired input of any kind. Truth be told, it doesn't sound that great. I recommend you save your money and get yourself a much nicer Bose speaker. They sound better, are of much higher build quality, and most importantly, don't distort when you max out the volume.
