Well, almost did not read this book because of the bad reviews.  Glad I had faith in the author.  Yes, she goes against the grain of the ostrich with its head in the sand.  Fact is, she is intelligent, well read, and is either trying to educate (commendable) or assumes we are all as educated and interested as she is. I commend the author for her efforts.  However, most of her readers expect a short mystery novel with a smattering of romance and intrigue.  They want their heads kept in the sand while they are entertained. I find the book well written, full of accurate facts and entertaining.  Sentences in this review are intentionally poorly constructed.  Am aware the devoted tester will probably not recognise the poor construction or. Any misspellings.  Still a fan Mrs Brown.  Thank you.  All those who either don't vote or don't particularly care about politics, please keep your head in the sand.  Our enemies love us like that.

This Mrs. Murphy mystery is fun to read.  I love the talking animals and their sense of superiority over humans, which I think is most likely well founded.  In this book, a former governor of Virginia, Harry's best friend Susan's grandfather, is in his last days and trying to finish his autobiography.  But the governor has a long held secret that he wants to reveal before his death.  There are others who would do anything, including murder, to keep the secret buried.  Another aspect of Rita Mae Brown's mysteries that I enjoy is that the culprit may be suspected but is never fully revealed until the end of the book.  In this edition, either the murderer or Harry and Susan will survive, and we don't know ho is left standing until the last pages.

I have read several of Rita Mae Brown's mysteries - both the cat "co-authored" and the hunt themed. I always find them interesting, as her characters are both believable and larger than life. Living as I do in Virginia, I also enjoy the descriptions of nearby areas. Clearly, Ms. Brown is a huge fan of the Charlottesville area.The talking animals are fun, and I enjoyed the range of animal characters in this book. It's fun to imagine them carrying on their conversations as the humans do theirs.This book also involved grapes, wine and the pests that afflict them, which I found interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes cozy mysteries and animals.
