“Seaward ho! Hang the treasure! It's the glory of the sea that has turned my head.” ― Robert Louis Stevenson, Treasure Island This beautiful edition contains ◆ 120 illustrations ◆ from the original edition which was published in 1915. The illustrations have been made by Louis Rhead. "For sheer storytelling delight and pure adventure, Treasure Island has never been surpassed. From the moment young Jim Hawkins first encounters the sinister Blind Pew at the Admiral Benbow Inn until the climactic battle for treasure on a tropic isle, the novel creates scenes and characters that have fired the imaginations of generations of readers. Written by a superb prose stylist, a master of both action and atmosphere, the story centers upon the conflict between good and evil - but in this case a particularly engaging form of evil. It is the villainy of that most ambiguous rogue Long John Silver that sets the tempo of this tale of treachery, greed, and daring. Designed to forever kindle a dream of high romance and distant horizons, Treasure Island is, in the words of G. K. Chesterton , 'the realization of an ideal, that which is promised in its provocative and beckoning map; a vision not only of white skeletons but also green palm trees and sapphire seas.' G. S. Fraser terms it 'an utterly original book' and goes on to write: 'There will always be a place for stories like Treasure Island that can keep boys and old men happy.' A True Classic that Belongs on Every Bookshelf! Review: Still an adventure! - As soon as I got used to the days English it was written in, I really got into the story. There were occasional sentences that I didn't fully understand, but I just blew over them as the story was so exciting I just couldn't be bothered with figuring them out. Also there were some words that I didn't know offhand, as I don't believe we use them in the same way anymore. But I didn't even care! Now that my ignorance is exposed, I must say, it was a grand adventure and everyone should have a chance to read it! It's not just for preteen and teenage boys to experience, I'm an older woman, and I loved it! Very funny at times. And I know first hand what makes this a classic! I Highly recommend this treasure. Even better, it was a free download for my Kindle! Review: Treasure Island - a story not easily forgotten! - Treasure Island is a novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson. When the Captain dies, Jim somehow ends up with a treasure map to Treasure Island. Which is also the same map almost every fearless, dangerous pirate is after. However, I thought the book was slow in the beginning, and, it took me a while to really get into the book. When I finally did, I couldn’t put it down! I grew to love the story and the characters. Robert Louis Stevenson created a classic fantasy adventure novel full of imagination. He includes many shocking plot twists in the story. This book was fun, and the dialogue was clever. I loved the characters. I especially liked Jim Hawkins, the main character. I liked how although he was very mature, he showed his true age through his childlike curiosity. All I all, Treasure Island is a classic adventure novel that will be talked about for years to come. I really enjoyed this pirate’s tale and will recommend it to others. “Fifteen men on the Dead Man's Chest Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! A Timeless Adventure Classic
I had never read this book until I downloaded it for free on Kindle. Wow! How did I ever miss this one? In my youth I read Tolkein, Burroughs, Howard, and many others, but, somehow I never got around to reading Treasure Island. Not only is this one of the great pirate tales, it is also THE buried treasure book, and, one of the truly great adventure stories of all time. While there are many that will find fault with some aspects of the story, all in all, I would suggest that all would-be writers desiring to tell a tale of adventure should take the time to reread this tale before they begin their labors. I should say that having done so, the bulk of them would recognize how far short their own efforts fall. Technically; the book is extremely well written, the plot moves along at a brisk pace, the characters are well drawn, and the dialog sparkles. There is plenty of action, adventure, and suspense, all of it told in a crystal clear prose that wastes not a word. In a nutshell this may indeed be one of the greatest tales of adventure ever told. Although it has traditionally been perceived as a story for younger readers, having just read it at middle age, I believe that you shouldn't consider this a children's tale. Long John Silver is as darkly evil a character as ever appeared in print; he seduces men with a ready confidentiality, warm, friendly, knowing banter, and then cold-bloodedly murders them when their back is turned. He suffers no scruples, knows nothing of mercy, and sells anyone at anytime to the other side if he thinks it will profit him. I think Long John Silver would have done well as a Wall Street corporate raider.

Decent enough, if you like Pirates
This is another one of those books that I never finished in my youth. I don't think I would've ever fully appreciated it back then, because the language IS rather... foreign. Having read it now, as an adult, it's not a bad story. The ending is definitely not what I had been led to believe from everything I'd heard about it. Jim Hawkins, the doctor, Benn Gunn and Long John Silver are all memorable characters. They're well fleshed out and consistently portrayed. The story itself has it's moments. I will confess to reading four or five pages, and at times stopping to wonder what had just happened. Some chapters I didn't have a clue what was going on, and because of it I missed important pieces of information which only served to confuse me further down the road. Other times, though, I was riveted, and that's what finally decided the three-star rating! I've never REALLY been a fan of pirate stories, but I think that this is definitely one of those classics that everyone should read at least once in their lives. If you enjoy pirates, though, you'll probably rate this one much higher than I did!

A classic sea adventure
I read this book for school, but completely enjoyed it! Though it can be a tad wordy and confusing at times, it is not too hard to follow. The story of Jim Hawkins and his voyage to Treasure Island along with Long John Silver, Captain Smollett, the squire, and the doctor not only captivated me till the end, but had me reading ahead because I wanted to know what happened next. It has all the characteristics of a good pirate tale, complete with mutiny, treasure, and betrayal. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to expand their literary knowledge; though it was published as a children's book anyone from the ages of 10 to 100 who enjoys a swashbuckling adventure story will devour this book. A true classic!!

Great Adventure story; missing links
Of course, this classic of Stevenson is a real classic. A great story about a boy growing up in an Inn, then going to sea to find a treasure. Many twists in the plot and a good outcome. Gives at the same time a look in early 19th c. life and a bunch of less used vocab, including maritime vocab :). The Kindle edition should have links from the table of contents (which was nicely scanned from the printed version), to the various chapters in the book. I remember that I have read (a translated) paper version a long time ago, and that there was a postscript, saying that 'he would not reveal the islands location' or something to that end. I missed that in this edition. Not sure why. Where there different editions originally, some having a epilogue, and some not? Is my memory failing? Something else? Anyway, it is a good idea to add also the very final pages, even if they do not contain any story. Recommended! (Four stars means for me: really good book, but not that top level of A++)

What a good book!
I had never really thought about reading this book until my teenage daughter was looking for something to read, and I recommended she try it. She told me what a good book it was, so I had to read it myself. The story moves along very briskly, is an easy read despite being written so long ago, and was a real page-turner. No wonder it's become a classic! I had always thought of it as a "children's" book, but it's got enough heft that adults will enjoy it, too. I was so impressed with Robert Louis Stevenson's writing that I next read "Kidnapped." Another excellent book, and a real eye-opener about Scottish history that I was unfamiliar with. Do yourself a favor and read them both.

"Yo Ho HO" Still a Great Read
Still a classic adventure with great writing and memorable characters. I feared that I would be disappointed re-reading this book as an adult and that my fond memories would be destroyed-as they were when I re-read Swiss Family Robinson. Swiss Family Robinson can only be enjoyed by children, I learned, because adults see immediately how ridiculous it is. Treasure Island, however, is a masterpiece. As a child, I did not appreciate the characterization of Long John Silver. I remembered him only as a "bad pirate," but he is so much more: devious and clever--and likable! I also, as an adult, recognized how much of our pirate folklore comes from this tale. I encourage adults to give this "treasure" another read. You'll have a new appreciation for this truly classic work.

What more can be said of this classic?
R L Stevenson wrote this yarn many a long moon ago, and it has been read with glee, by many a youngster in schools of North America at least. Revisiting it at the age of 67 has given me fresh joy, and so I heartily recommend that you do likewise. "Pieces of Eight! Pieces of Eight! "

A Timeless Classic
There are some those of us who can remember a time when books were more than just trainee wizards or sparkly vampires and inspired us to spend many happy hours of our summer holidays, sitting in the shade on a summer's day, book in hand, letting our imaginations run wild to truly timeless stories. And there can be none more inspiring to any young boy than the tale of young Jim Hawkins as he travels the seas on the Hispaniola, searching for lost pirate treasure. Yes, the book is predominantly aimed at a male market but why should we let this take away from our guilty pleasure as - in later life - we secretly pull this book out for a sneaky read to relive our childhood. For any young reader the language can be difficult, being written over a hundred years ago when education focused on grammer and when children could write words and sentences, not relying on simplistic words and text speak. But this shouldn't be a hindrance, oh no dear reader. For the story will soon draw you in and before you know it, you'll be on deck with Jim, listening to pirate sea shanties and eagerly anticipating the first sight of Skull Island - last known resting place of Captain Flint's lost treasure. The characters are interesting, though there is not much bacground to any of them. Not that this matters as we're only interested in the main players - Jim, Long John Silver, Squire Trelawney, plus a couple of others. Much research was given by Stevenson into the whole sailing aspect, with references (some obvious, others not so) to real life pirates and historical events. There are also questions over the chronology of the story but it's a children's book, for heaven's sake, so don't get bogged down in all that. How many children's (or adult) novels can honestly admit to being accurate within a given timescale? All in all, the story is fun, fast-paced and not overly long. Anyone can enjoy it so go on, indulge your inner child and relive some of that youth you may have forgotten as you "matured".
