The advice reads like the usual magazine blurb, fun and lively but lacking in real insight, and with cute but uninformative illustrations. We all know how to throw together the cool looks in the magazine pages! We know Jane Birkin looks great! But these looks don’t work on us - something gets in the way - our bodies, our lifestyles, not to mention our budgets - that’s why we turn to style books for some answers. I found very few answers in this book, and the approach to ageing didn’t inspire me - turning to comfy flat shoes may be practical but there’s a cost, a sacrifice: that’s what we are confronting as older women, and that’s what I want to see addressed. The fashionistas interviewed are similarly unhelpful, and I particularly object to hypocritical comments such as ‘I’ve never liked fashion...’ (whilst casually mentioning purchasing her red glasses from that fashionable venue, Spitalfields Market). Another contributor crows about how she’s finally accepted her older body shape...and on the very next page we learn that she’s been modelling for the last 10 years. There are many such eye-roll moments. And don’t get me started on my #1 most hated bit of advice regularly doled out to the over 39’s (p.87) - ‘Less is more’. What is the logic behind this? Our faces lose definition as we age, and (assuming you’re interested in wearing makeup in the first place) wearing less won’t help a thing. Older women are intelligent, we are not at risk of trowelling it on (that warning always strikes me as deeply patronising) - why would we do that? I feel this book barely scratches the surface of the issues women face as they try to stay stylish forever. It’s more concerned with what looks great in a magazine. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Style Forever by Alison Walsh *by B***L on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 August 2015* Lovely book for those interested in clothes/personal style. Great encouragement for 50+ ladies who would rather 'stay out there'! I keep it by my bed and dip into it from time to time, especially if I am about to do a bit of 'retail therapy'. Or, I am bored with my wardrobe - when the 'I've got nothing to wear' syndrome creeps in. Good advice on hair, skin care and makeup.
